A new camera sensor, or should that be sensors, are the next big change in smartphone cameras if HTC [1]‘s plans are anything to go by. Instead of having one 13 megapixel sensor, HTC plans to use three 4.3 megapixel sensors combined to give a much higher resolution sensor that will capture images in astounding detail and colour, according to Pocket-Lint [2].

This is similar to Sigma’s Foveon X3 sensor [3], and a very similar technology to the U.S. military spy drone [4] that can capture images the size of 15 sq/miles in an incredible 1800MP. The camera in mobile phones was a major selling point that faded in importance over time, but now after Nokia’s Pureview and the push for 13MP cameras in mobile phones it seems the camera could make its way back as a major selling point.

The Ultrapixel sensor could be just that for HTC’s new rumoured [5] M7 smartphone. According to Unwiredview [6], a trusted source close to the development has revealed that the new M7 will sport a second-generation 1.7GHz quad-core processor from Qualcomm, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal flash storage and a 4.7-inch 1080p full HD display. But the combined 3 sensor camera is what really will set it apart from the competition.
