With Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch released last week and the overall wearable tech scene becoming increasingly popular, Nissan now joins the party by announcing its own smartwatch. The Nissan Nismo is said to be the first smartwatch to connect the driver to his/ her car and also provide them with real-time biometric data.
Mainly aimed at the racer crowds, the Nismo will monitor the efficiency of your vehicle with average speed and fuel consumption readings as well as performance data while on the track. It will, for instance, display notifications such as letting you know it’s time for car maintenance, your average speed and so on.
One of the features that really stands out is the fact that it’s not only connected to the car and the road but it’s also connected to you. For instance, in the promo video, the Nismo shows the driver their heart rate matching up with the car’s speed and urging them to slowdown. Nissan hopes to use similar biometric data in the future to help drivers avoid fatigue syndrome, for example.
The Nismo will also pack some curious social features. As strange as this might sound, the watch will let you “tweet like a pro” meaning that it will post your max speed or “social speed” on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Nissan’s Marketing Communications General Manager Gareth Dunsmore notes the need to keep up with latest trends:
“Wearable technology is fast becoming the next big thing and we want to take advantage of this innovative technology to make our Nismo Brand more accessible. On track, Nissan uses the latest biometric training technologies to improve the performance of our Nissan Nismo Athletes and it is this technology we want to bring to our fans to enhance their driving experience and Nismo ownership.”
Nissan Nismo connects to your car via Bluetooth using a compatible smartphone app. It’s available in three different colours — orange, black or white. The concept design looks sleek and will have two control buttons while carrying a battery that will last for about seven days.
The Nismo smartwatch is part of one of Nissan’s newest initiatives called the Nismo Lab. The lab aims to experiment and keep up with the latest advanced biometric training tools such as brainwave technology and other cutting-edge performance analysis. No price or release date is known but given the fancy speed-racer market, it won’t go for cheap.
