A PS4 controller

Steam gets native PS4 controller support with new update

Prefer your PS4 controller and want to use it for PC games? Well, support hasn’t exactly been consistent, but that looks set to change with the latest Steam update.

The PC gaming storefront has introduced native support for PS4 controllers with its latest update.

Just how deeply integrated is the support though? Let’s just say that it’s actually on par with the Steam Controller, owing to gyro and touchpad features as well.

“When enabled, PS4 controllers will have access to the same sort of customization/configuration support as Steam Controllers, including native API support,” Valve explained in the Steam update notes.

PS4 controllers now enjoy the same level of technical support as Steam’s own gamepad

“PS4 controllers using this system can map the trackpad, gyro, buttons, etc. to keyboard, mouse, or x-input outputs and can make use of action sets, touch menus, radial menus, and so forth,” the company added.

Otherwise, other changes as a result of the update include: improved download/patching speeds for non-SSD storage, more options for 4K in-home streaming, “joystick-based mouse control” for those with controllers and more bug fixes.
