  • Mi Box 4 Android TV box to come to South Africa, but when?

Xiaomi distributor MIA Group has delivered a decent variety of products recently, including the Mi A1 (review), Mi 6 and the Redmi 4X (review). But there are plenty of other products under the Xiaomi umbrella that could do with a local release, starting with the Mi Box Android TV device. We managed to nab the Mi Box 4K HDR from Gearbest, being suitably impressed with the streaming gadget. Now, an MIA Group representative has confirmed to Gearburn that the recently revealed Mi Box 4 will be coming to local shores. A launch date hasn't been nailed down just yet, but the...

  • Meizu E3: iPhone X-style budget device leaks on China’s TENAA

Meizu has already revealed one major phone this year, in the form of the M6s, packing a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and mid-range Samsung Exynos processor. Now, China's TENAA regulatory body has revealed the existence of one more model. Or rather, there seem to be two listings for near-identical models, dubbed M851M and M851Q. Fortunately, previous leaks point to this being the Meizu E3. The information and images show that the devices pack a 5.9-inch 2160x1080 18:9 display -- reminiscent of the LG G6 (review). Otherwise, the images also show side-mounted fingerprint scanners, MBlu branding on the back and a dual camera housing...

  • LG V30s to launch at MWC 2018 – report

A few weeks ago, we got confirmation from a local LG executive that an upgraded LG V30 would be launched at MWC 2018. "We will introduce at MWC for V30… upgraded version (sic)," LG South Africa's CY Kim told journalists at LG's Innofest event in Cape Town last month. Now, Korea's ETNews has delivered more details, revealing that it would be called the LG V30s. So how will it differ from the bog-standard V30? According the publication, the V30s will offer the same design but stand out with 256GB of storage and LG Lens functionality. The latter has drawn comparisons to Bixby...

  • Hacker brings Windows 10 ARM to Lumia smartphone

Windows 10 Mobile was a bit of a disaster for Microsoft, to say the least. Between the Android/iOS duopoly, app gap and the ridiculously unpolished nature in the first few months, there's little wonder why Microsoft has quietly killed it. Unfortunately, the Redmond company doesn't plan to bring Windows 10 ARM (the Windows 10 for mobile devices) to Lumia phones. But where there's a will, there's a way, and an enterprising hacker has apparently got Windows 10 ARM to boot up on the Lumia 950. • Qualcomm rejects ‘final’ Broadcom offer, but is deal actually off?

Qualcomm's board of directors have unanimously rejected a 'best and final' acquisition offer from fellow chipmaker Broadcom. The US$121-billion offer saw Qualcomm shares valued at US$82 per share, comprised of US$60 in cash and US$22 in Broadcom shares. "The Qualcomm board, assisted by its financial and legal advisors, determined that the Broadcom proposal materially undervalues Qualcomm and falls well short of the firm regulatory commitment the board would demand given the significant downside risk of a failed transaction," read an excerpt of a Qualcomm news release. The board hasn't completely shut down a possible deal though, saying it was "committed to exploring all...

  • Android Oreo: Update comes to Galaxy S8

Android users generally have to wait a while to get the latest update, with Samsung being no exception. Fortunately, it seems like the firm has given the green light for Android Oreo on the Galaxy S8 (review) and S8+. According to SamMobile, the update is currently hitting users in Germany, first targeting beta testers before delivery to everyone else. The publication adds that availability comes two weeks after beta testing ended. So what's new then? The Korean firm recently showed off an infographic to beta testers, highlighting the Samsung-specific additions and tweaks. We have a customisable keyboard toolbar (the area just...

  • Xiaomi’s goal? Regain top spot in China ‘within 10 quarters’

2017 saw Xiaomi bounce back from a rather tumultuous 2016, as it clawed back marketshare and delivered a ton of growth globally and in its home of China. Then there was its resurgence back home, joining Huawei in being the only major manufacturers to see growth in China in 2017. Now, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has reflected on 2017, while also outlining plans for 2018. And foreign markets will be a big focus.
