  • Why 2014 is the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3’s best year

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are shiny and new, but that doesn’t mean you should run out and buy them right away. No, there’s still a lot of life to glean from the old PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In fact, if you’re new to consoles altogether, there are compelling reasons why you should go for one of these older consoles instead of forking out considerably more for their successors. Outside of the games, the differences between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are largely negligible, but there are a few worth mentioning. First, here is what the PS3 has...

  • ‘Need for Speed Rivals’ review: the endless road

Need for Speed Rivals is the latest title to be spawned from the Need for Speed family and the first one born from the hands of new Swedish developers, Ghost Games. It was built on the new Frostbite 3 engine, the same one used for the recently released Battlefield 4. How does it fare? First Impressions As you start it up it you’re forced to watch a lengthy and unskippable two-minute intro video. The voice in this intro seems like it’s trying overly hard to be philosophically deep and poignant but it just isn’t. It comes off shallow, though, at...

  • Take that, Xbox: Sony’s PS3 is now the best selling console in the US

It had to happen, eventually. After two and a half years as the US’ best selling console, the Xbox 360 has now been knocked off the number one position by Sony’s PS3 according to NDP statistics. The reason? GTA V, said Geekwire. Matter of fact, this is why GTA V made the PS3 sell like proverbial hotcakes: Click the image to see Amazon’s deal. It’s just so damn cheap… Only R2700 (US$269) for a PS3 and the best game of 2013. Just take our money, please. Need more evidence? For that, we go to VGChartz. It’s the console that’s seen the most GTA...

  • Saints Row IV review: sandbox lunacy comes full circle

In Saints Row IV, the series comes full circle. What started out as a GTA clone has mushroomed into something utterly bonkers. All pretence has disappeared and any veneer of respectability has been yanked away, replaced instead by farce, lunacy and lashings of self referential wit. Saints Row IV isn’t content to merely be another sandbox game. It distances itself from the competition while at the same time drawing attention to a litany of pop culture influences. We have Keith David playing… Keith David, a dubstep gun, superpowers, and a number of missions that overtly mock films and games of...

  • Budget 12GB PS3 costs $199, is gearing up for US, Canada launch

Ain’t this a surprise, what with digital downloads being somewhat important these days. Sony’s going to release a 12GB PS3 that costs US$199 (R2 000) and will have a solid-state drive, the first PS3 to do so. Canadian store Future Shop were the first to place the 12GB PS3 on sale, and Engadget was lucky enough to snap a shot before the site took the listing down. Sony said last year that is was planning to develop a cheaper PS3 but wasn’t going to bring it to North America because of the “digital consumer.” Without a large drive, the PS3...
