  • 2013’s console of the year: Sony PlayStation 4

The release of the PS4 was one of the most anticipated moments for gamers in 2013. Since the release of the PS1 back in the early ninties the Playstation has grown to become the most sought after console of all time. With the recent release of the PS4, it isn’t showing any signs of backing down. History lessons The PlayStation name has firmly cemented itself within the minds of gamers all over the world. And to think it almost never existed. The idea for the Playstation was born back in the days when Sony (together with Phillips Electronics) developed a CD...

  • The 10 most excellent iOS games of 2013

Looking back on the last three hundred odd days though, We all have a tendency to start compiling lists. With such a stressful year, I found myself turning to a lot of games to pass time and de-stress, so here are my top 10 iOS games for 2013. Before I begin, I have to mention that this list is a combination of Apple’s results and my own choices. Also, not all of these came out in 2013, but I played them throughout the year, so that’s why they made the list. Ridiculous Fishing Ridiculously original and addictive, the title says it all...

  • 5 of the best games of rAge 2013

It’s difficult to make a decision regarding the best games on show this past weekend at rAge, South Africa’s largest gaming and technology expo. Every single distributor brought their A-game, and this year’s expo was most definitely a resounding success! I have however managed to narrow my very, very long list of awesomeness down to a Top 5. It was difficult, but I got there. So in no particular order, here we go: Batman: Arkham Origins I was very worried about this game, primarily because of the change in developer. It’s moved away from Rocksteady Games and in-house to Warner Bros,...

  • rAge 2013: what to expect from Africa’s largest gaming expo

Every year, gamers from all over South Africa converge on Johannesburg to take in the geek fest that is rAge. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not counting myself out of that geek category – I say it in the most complimentary manner possible. I’ve been going to rAge for as long as I can remember, and I’ve seen it grow from a small expo of core gaming fans, to a massive gaming extravaganza that draws people in by the droves. This makes me happy – it brings together the gaming community in a way that not much else can, as...

This infographic from Finances Online puts 2013’s popular consumer electronics into some perspective. This year in particular we’ve seen Google move more and more into the hardware space with the renewed Nexus 7, the Moto X and the media streaming dongle Chromecast. It’s also interesting seeing some great smartphones...

  • The 3 biggest fails of Gamescom 2013

There was much to talk about after this year’s Gamescom 2013. Battlefield 4, Titanfall and Fable Legends were some of the successes, the eagerly awaited games demoed at the world’s trendiest gaming expo. There were plenty of bland, hand-smacking-against-forehead moments as well, such as the three listed below. Ryse Watching Ryse in action, you can’t help but wonder whether this is Microsoft’s answer to Sony’s God of War. It has the historical setting and the liberal bloodshed, but whereas God of War was a cleverly paced and varied experience, Ryse feels as if it’s resolutely action-orientated. Our first look at Ryse, an...

  • Apple’s WWDC invite suddenly makes sense

Last week, 9To5Mac posted a revealing story about Apple’s upcoming iOS 7 software, describing the all-new, flat design championed by lead designer Jony Ive. Interestingly, the story mentioned a unique color scheme for each app in iOS: Additionally, the iPhone’s Notes app has replaced the yellow notepad design for a flat white look. Apps such as Mail, Calendar, and Maps have also gained a more uniformed look with flat white textures. While the core elements of those apps are mostly white, each app has been given a unique button color. Essentially, each app has a white base with a respective color theme. For...

  • No ‘Destiny’ in 2013 says Activision

Care of Joystiq.com and a sneaky Activision press release, we’ve learned that Bungie’s next “ten year project”, Destiny won’t launch in 2013. Boo. We all know the story. Destiny is a planned FPS/MMO hybrid, set in a “epic, sci-fi universe and introduces innovative persistent, online world filled with sweeping adventures”. The press release speaks of grand scope, visceral first-person gaming and a living, vibrant world. But most telling is the single sentence Activision sneaks in: Activision reiterated that although Bungie’s amazing new world was revealed today, Activision has not included the launch in its 2013 outlook and there should be no...

  • Highlights from the 2013 Chicago Auto Show

In the windy city of Chicago, muscle car crazed Americans had their chance to show off some new metal to the world this weekend. Now, bearing in mind that most of the cars produced in America never see the light in any other country, let’s find out what kind of vehicles we could be driving around in, should we be so fortunate. “Turbo” Camaro Coupe

  • The 10 most anticipated indie games of 2013

This time of year has a serious lack of new releases. I’m not sure if people are still playing through the mass of games that are released towards the end of year, but January, even right up until March is a seriously dry gaming period, with perhaps only one or two titles that I find interesting. Luckily, for those of us who love these things, indie games provide a great alternative to AAA titles. And although January still doesn’t offer us much in this arena either, there are some amazing indie games apparently set for release this year that are...
