  • These notable games are coming out in January 2017

Who says that the post-Christmas period has to see a lull in game releases? Yep, believe it or not, but there are a few notable titles coming out this month. And we're even seeing some hardware hit SA stores as well, so let's take quick look then. Resident Evil 7 (PC, PS4, Xbox One) Set for release on 24 January, Resident Evil 7 is the latest and perhaps most radical title in the long-running Capcom franchise. For starters, the game stands out thanks to its first-person perspective. Sure, Resident Evil Survivor did it before, but... Resident Evil Survivor... Anyway, the franchise also seems to go...

  • Nintendo 3DS receives stability firmware update 11.2.0-35, adds nothing new

Just over a month after its previous 11.1.0-34 update, Nintendo has released a brand new firmware for the handheld console. What does this new update add? This new update, simply named 11.2.0-35, brings with it a range of no new features. In fact, it includes the only thing that's been present in the previous 13 updates: "System stability improvements and other adjustments." That's according to Nintendo's support page for the console range. Given the slew of these same updates, Nintendo is more than likely trying to block illegal software from running on the system. Just four days after the release of 11.1.0-34, the modding community...

  • Quest of Dungeons review [3DS]: brutal roguelike gaming on the go

Indie game Quest of Dungeons, from Upfall Studios, has finally made its way to the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U after being released on a range of other platforms. With so many AAA titles out this month, is Quest of Dungeons really worth your time? Quest of Dungeons is a roguelike RPG that has you venturing through randomly generated dungeons in order to defeat an end-game boss. The story is simplistic in a "kill the bad guy" kind of way, and you don't need anything deeper than that. It does come with two pre-created stories and a random mode, but I feel as...

  • Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past review [3DS]: one of the best JRPGs ever

There’s a distinct lack of traditional JRPGs in this modern age of re-invented consoles and hyper-realistic graphics. One series that has stayed true to its roots is Dragon Quest. Finally, after 16 years, English fans will be able to experience one of the most epic gaming tales ever: Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The game originally debuted on the PlayStation 1 and has now been remastered for the Nintendo 3DS console. Well, it's only just been localised for English audiences and was in fact released in Japan three years ago. Fans in the 'Western' market have been clamouring...

  • Nintendo 3DS receives stability firmware update 11.1.0-34

After four months, Nintendo has released a new firmware update for the 3DS family of consoles. The new update, 11.1.0-34E, only brings with it some stability fixes. As stated in the Support section of the Nintendo website, this update contains: "Further improvements to overall system stability, system security and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user's experience." This new update should...

  • Nintendo 3DS receives stability firmware update 11.0.0-33

It's time for another Nintendo 3DS firmware update, bringing the operating system up to version 11.0.0-33. Don't get too excited as it only brings along some stability fixes. According to Nintendo's patch notes, this update contains: "Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience." It might come with new features or a massive overhaul to somehow integrate My Nintendo, but at least the company cares enough to make sure its devices work well. • Latest Humble Bundle includes excellent selection of Nintendo Wii U, 3DS games

The latest Humble Bundle package includes a range of games for the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS consoles. To answer the inevitable question: Yes, these will work in South Africa. Named the Humble Friends of Nintendo Bundle, the packages includes the likes of Darksiders II, Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition, Retro City Rampage, and even a theme for the 3DS. In order to get your hands on these, you'll need to fork over at least US$1 for the base bundle, which is pretty much a bargain for anything on a Nintendo platform. Unlike last year's Nintendo-themed Humble Bundle, these titles are available in...

  • Nintendo 3DS receives incremental firmware update 10.6.0-31

Japanese video game company Nintendo has released another firmware update for its line of 2DS/3DS handheld consoles. Named 10.6.0-31, it doesn't seem to bring much to the table. According to the Nintendo's vague changelog entry for the revision, it adds stability and adjustments to the system. "Further improvements to overall system stability, system security and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user's experience." After applying the update, there doesn't appear to be any noticeable changes to the system, though improved stability behind the scenes is always welcome. There is speculation that all of the incremental updates are slowly laying the...

  • ‘The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask’ hits Nintendo 3DS this Spring

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D is coming to Nintendo 3DS and 2DS this Spring (March 2015, we guess). Announced earlier this week during a Nintendo Direct session, Nintendo's promising a remade version that will "maintain the original level of challenge while keeping the game accessible for anyone." For those who don't know of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, you've missed out on a sizable chunk of childhood memories. Of course, many of us never had the chance to play it, as it was released on the cult Nintendo console, the N64. This console never made it to South...

  • Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS review: knockout king

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (yes, that's its actual name) is what those in the business call "extremely fun". It's an incredibly varied, accessible and detailed fighter with more than 50 characters, lovingly crafted to look and feel like the games they've been pinched from. Pikachu squeaks when it launches a lightening bolt. Link of Legend of Zelda fame yells as he whirlwinds towards Mario, and Sonic whizzes with the gusto of his Sega Genesis days. Super Smash Bros. is, most of all, a nostalgia trip down the long and storied road of Nintendo's past and present successes. This game is...
