  • Firefox OS first impressions: no Android killer, yet

Although Firefox OS 2.1 is the latest stable version, our review unit featured Firefox OS 2.0. It has been a while since we've seen a new mobile operating system out in the wild. Back in 2008, Android tepidly crept into view and back then, it wasn't predicted to become one of the greatest mobile OSes ever crafted. Look at it's mobile device market share today, and you'd wonder why technology analysts and journalists still have jobs. So when Mozilla announced Firefox OS and launched the initial version of it then-called "Boot to Gecko" back in 2013, the world didn't quite prick...

  • Mozilla to offer $25 Firefox OS-powered smartphones by year-end

While Google's Android and Apple's iOS compete at the higher spectrum of the smartphone market, Mozilla is aiming a little lower. So low, in fact, that its planning to sell a US$25 Firefox OS smartphone in India and Indonesia before this year ends, according to WSJ. This price largely undercuts the retail price of most feature phones, an indication that Mozilla hopes to capitalise on emerging markets' massive smartphone boom. Rather than marketing their OS for high end phones competing with Android and iOS, it plans to embrace low income adopters, a market area largely forgotten my smartphone manufacturers. Mozilla will...

  • ZTE Open debuts as first Firefox OS phone

Dirt cheap and open. That's the direction Mozilla is heading with its Firefox-run devices. Mozilla announced the launch of its first range of smartphones with its own featured OS. For now, the two retail versions running Firefox OS are the Alcatel One Touch Fire and the ZTE Open. These are the very first Firefox OS devices to be launched aimed at consumers. The OS is not meant to tackle iOS, Android or Windows 8 head on though. Instead devices running it are meant to serve the interests of the emerging markets and people aiming to go post feature phone. Given...

The press event will not only cement the partnership between the two companies, but will introduce a new Firefox OS device, rumoured to a be a tablet says an "industry insider". Developers who want to get their hands on an early preview version of Firefox OS can visit Geeksphone.com and purchase either the €91 Keon or the €149 Peak, which...

  • Sony commits to Firefox OS devices by 2014

Following in the footsteps of Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel and LG, Sony has announced it too will commit to the HTML5 bandwagon by 2014 with a mobile device running on Firefox, said deputy CEO Bob Ishida (thank you GSMArena). Firefox OS will launch later this year in selected countries, which will make it the third latest OS launched for 2013 together with Blackberry 10 and Ubuntu. This announcement comes after wireless carrier Telefonica plans to offer the Sony Xperia Z and Tablet Z as part of its services, adding that it and Sony have begun exploring the development of a Firefox OS...

  • ZTE (basically) confirms it’s launching a Firefox OS phone at MWC

ZTE, China's second largest telecoms manufacturer, seems to have all but confirmed that it will push forward with plans to launch a Firefox OS-powered smartphone by the end of 2013, following on the announcement it made last year. According to Engadget, ZTE sent out an invite mentioning a new mobile launch and the hashtag "ZTEMozilla", which suggests the phone will be announced at Mobile World Congress next month. Least year the smartphone maker revealed that it was teaming up with Mozilla to produce smartphones running on the open source Firefox system. About 90% of ZTE's smartphones currently run on Android,...

  • Mozilla Firefox OS demoed on mystery dev phone

After making a surprise appearance at CES 2013 on an unknown smartphone and just in preview form (see video at the end), Mozilla has just announced a "Developer Preview Phone" running on a Firefox operating system. Mozilla is touting it on the official webpage, and the Mozilla Developer Network has published instructions on how to get your Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich phone to install Firefox OS. The year has been hotting up...
