  • 48 hours with the Honor 8X

It's been a long year. So long, in fact, that I can barely recall the smartphones I've actually used. For the most part, devices have been dominated by notches, tall screens, and a focus on AI in some capacity. And my latest review subject happens to tick all three boxes. The Honor 8X, for all intents and purposes, is what you get if you made a smartphone in 2018 almost entirely to trend, with a few added bonuses and novelties. Speaking of which, after using the phone for 48 hours, here are some of the things that I immediately noticed about the...

  • Leaked Huawei P Smart 2019 features a teardrop notch

The Huawei P Smart has been one of the company's best performing devices in South Africa, and it looks like we might be in for a revision in the new year. Leaked by German tech site WinFuture, the Huawei P Smart 2019, as it's referred to, will feature a 6.2 inch LCD screen with a 2340x1080 resolution. This is the Huawei P Smart 2019. More official pics: https://t.co/x79ydnZ85J pic.twitter.com/61PXuuXFDb — Roland Quandt (@rquandt) 23 November 2018 There's no obscene notch on this model either as it steps away from the P10-era design language. Like the Mate 20, the P Smart 2019 will have...

  • Honor’s gunning for SA’s biggest smartphone brands in 2020 plan

Honor, Huawei's e-brand, is seriously ambitious. The company this week, alongside the launch of its 8X flagship, announced its intention to become one of South Africa's top three smartphone brands by 2020. But is it an attainable and realistic goal? The brand's CEO for South Africa Raymond Liu believes that it is. "In some markets we need to go even faster than headquarter's strategy," Liu told Gearburn in an interview, suggesting that the fast-paced South African mobile market is one of the company's key regions. Notably, this target doesn't just include the Honor 8X, but will also include the company's two other...

  • Honor officially arrives in South Africa, debuts the swanky 8X

Huawei has a fairly thick smartphone portfolio in South Africa, but on Tuesday night the company introduced its "e-brand" to the country. Although you could purchase its phones for a good few months already, Honor officially announced its presence in South Africa, and with it, the 8X flagship. At R5499, it's an interesting device, with a keen focus on aesthetics, entertainment, and a marketing slant that vehemently targets active, young, flat white-indulging colour-running Millennials. A vast swathe of Honor's presentation deck centres on the device's design cherry-topped by the incredibly shiny rear plate, and two-tone finish. It's available in black, blue, and...

  • Honor 2018 flagship coming, to be based on Huawei P20?

Huawei's Honor sub-brand saw a stealthy launch in South Africa earlier this month, offering the mid-range Honor 9 Lite and Honor 7X. The brand is also known for taking flagship Huawei phones and releasing them under the Honor name, albeit with a different design and a few other tweaks. For example, we saw the Honor 9 in June 2017, essentially being a Huawei P10 in terms of chipset and camera setup. Back in 2016 we also saw the Honor 8, being a Huawei P9 with a few changes. Now, an Honor representative has confirmed to Gearburn that the sub-brand will be offering...

  • Don’t expect high-end Honor smartphones in South Africa

Huawei's Honor sub-brand silently launched in South Africa last week, bringing the mid-range Honor 7X and Honor 9 Lite to the country. The two devices are very similar to the R4000 Huawei P Smart, save for a few tweaks here and there. But the sub-brand also plays host to some high-end wares, such as the recent Honor View 10 and Honor 9. However, you shouldn't hold your breath for these top-shelf phones anytime soon. "Will we see high-end Honor phones in the country, such as the Honor View 10 and Honor 9?" we asked the sub-brand in an emailed query. [caption id="attachment_107330"...

  • 4 little-known smartphone brands now available in South Africa

Mobile enthusiast? Then you'll know about the likes of Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, LG and other prominent smartphone brands. But there are a few more brands out there that are actually available in South Africa. Whether they're available via networks, Cellucity, Takealot or online stores, here are some of the little-known brands that have recently established a local presence. Ulefone Ulefone generally stands out thanks to its Samsung-inspired naming conventions. Seriously, they released an S8 model (and Pro variant) when the Galaxy S8 launched, and they've since followed up with an S9 to coincide with the Galaxy S9 launch. In any event, the Ulefone...

  • ICYMI: Honor smartphones now available via Takealot

It's taken a while, but Huawei's Honor sub-brand is now available locally via Takealot, we noticed (are we late to the party?). The Honor brand of phones pack similar specifications to Huawei's main lineup, but feature different designs and a generally cheaper price tag. For instance, the Honor 8 had a cheaper price internationally, while also featuring near-identical specs to the Huawei P9 (review). The Honor sub-brand also distinguished itself from Huawei's phones by being online-exclusive at first. In terms of devices available in South Africa, they bear quite a resemblance to the recently launched Huawei P Smart. There's the R3499 Honor 9...

  • Honor V10 is official, a taste of what to expect with P11?

The Honor V10 leaked a few days ago, but the London event finally took place last night. So what's there to know about the new smartphone? For one, the phone indeed packs the same Kirin 970 chipset used in the Mate 10. And it's most likely the same chipset that will appear in the P11, as we reported earlier this month. The chipset, which consists of four high-powered A73 cores and four lightweight A53 cores, also packs a Neural Processing Unit for AI calculations. So what's the Honor V10 doing with the machine learning grunt? Well, Huawei's Honor website lists AI voice...

  • 5 Asian mobile brands we’d like to see in SA

Between Huawei's dominance on the continent and Xiaomi's in-roads via MIA Group, it's clear that Chinese smartphone brands are enjoying unprecedented success in Africa. South Africa has quite a few other Chinese brands too, such as Meizu and OnePlus, as well as a few that seem to be on the wall (ZTE, Oukitel). But there are definitely a few more Chinese and Asian brands in general we'd like to see in the country and on the continent at large. Honor Technically speaking, Honor is a sub-brand of Huawei, treated as an independent entity. Sort of like OnePlus being owned by Oppo but...
