  • Vodacom launches Smart Tab 3G 7-inch tablet aimed at the masses

Two months after the launch of the Smart Kicka, an entry level smartphone retailing at R549, Vodacom has launched a 7-inch 3G tablet that will cost less than R1 000 and will, if the cellular giant is to be believed, also bring mobile connectivity to a whole new section of the South African population. “Providing access in South Africa is not easy, but our strategy is to deliver access to everyone,” says Vodacom Chief Officer for the Consumer Business Unit Phil Patel. The Vodacom Smart Tab 3G is available from today and can be purchased on a 24 month contract, starting...

  • We’re liveblogging Apple’s iPhone 6 and iWatch launch, just for you

Here we go. After months of speculation (mostly from us), Apple is finally launching… stuff. And by stuff, we mean a new iPhone, hopefully an iWatch and perhaps even a new iPad or two. Apple’s going to broadcast the entire event live on its official site, but for those without a decent connection or an OS X device to stream it from, we’ll be live-blogging the event for you. That means pictures, insights and the biting sarcasm you’ve come to love, or desperately hate. Either way, Apple’s launch is happening tonight at 7PM (CAT) and you can’t stop us. Unless...

  • Samsung Galaxy S5 hits South Korea today, defies April 11 ‘launch date’

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 was supposed to launch April 11 in South Korea. But some sneaky stores are already selling it from today, says Bloomberg and Samsung is “very puzzled” by this. It’s called consumerism, guys. If people want it enough, they’ll get it. April 11 is the global launch date of the S5, where it’s set to hit India, South Korea, UK, the US and other regions. So what gives, why did the S5 launch today in South Korea? “SK Telecom strongly asked for an earlier release of the product but we delivered our stance that the global release date of...

  • Xbox One finally coming to SA and 25 other markets in September

Fashionably late or worth the wait? The console hailed as becoming Microsoft’s most successful to date has just been confirmed for 26 markets across the globe including South Africa. The Xbox One was first launched in the US, UK and a handful of other markets November last year. Xbox fans from the “rest of the world” were pretty bleak though as they were left in the dark of when the next-gen console will be launching in their regions. The Xbox One has proved to be exceptionally popular, especially since the recent launch of the fast-paced mech warrior shooter Titanfall...

  • iPhone 5S, 5C arrives in South Africa, Brazil and others 15 November [rumour]

It’s now widely understood that Apple will launch its two new iPhones, the 5S and 5C, into territories such as South Africa, Qatar and Brazil on 15 November, said Appadvice (Apple is yet to confirm). The site sources its information from an internal email which states that telecoms Sprint and Global will allow customers in the Philippines to “register their interest” for a 5C or 5S for the expected launch date. Here’s the full list of countries where the new iPhones are expected to appear: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Ecuador, Grenada, Indonesia, Israel, Jamaica, Jordan,...

  • We’re liveblogging the new Apple iPad launch

The iPad launch event takes place 22 October in San Francisco, and we’ll be live-blogging the affair with the usual wit and charm you’ve come to expect from us (in other words, very little). What we already know speaks volumes about the event: there are going to be new iPads, iPad Minis, fresh MacPros, the possible launch date of OS X Mavericks and hopefully one or two surprises (*cough* iWatch), but we won’t be holding our breath for that. From 7PM (in South Africa, otherwise 10AM PT / 6PM London) it’ll be all things Apple as we dissect, insult and...

  • Nokia launches three new Ashas, Lumia 1520 and 1320, plus 2520 tablet

This morning it’s all about Nokia. Later on, Apple’s going to try and capture some of that gadget magic we crave. Nokia’s going to show us a new super-sized phone, Apple’s going to punt refurbished tablets. But you came here for Nokia news, and the Finnish company has delivered. From Nokia World, live in Abu Dhabi earlier today, Nokia launched “the next generation of Nokia innovation”, namely three new Ashas (the 500, 502 and 503). It’s also catered to the phablet market with the 6″ Lumia 1520 and the “for the youth” 1320 (also 6″). Finally, it announced its...

  • Mark your calendars: the next Apple iPad event is… 22 October

In under two weeks, on 22 October, Apple will reveal a new iPad, according to AllThingsD. It’ll be the usual invite-only affair and according to “people familiar with Apple’s plans”, not only will the fifth-gen iPad feature, but OS X Mavericks, a new iPad Mini and Mac Pros will also make appearances. Current Editorials also predicts that a second round of Apple product launches will take place in October, as the company looks to offer iPads with both higher resolutions and possibly, fingerprint readers as seen on the iPhone 5S. The new iPad should be the chief focus of the launch....

  • PS4 launches in Japan 22 January 2014

Sony’s made two announcements today. One: PS Vita TV which we’ve written about. Two: the PlayStation 4 is launching in Japan 22 January 2014, a full 90-days after the US launch, As reported by Engadget. It’s madness to launch the PS4 so late in a country that favour’s Sony’s products over Microsoft, but we’re sure that the home of PlayStation has its reasons. The PS4 is going to be priced at 41 979 Yen, which is US$421 (R4 210) for those in the states. The price of the PS4 is set at US$399, so the price shift to Yen seems marginal. Now,...

  • Mystery 7 August LG event probably about the Optimus G2

LG’s sending out invites as we speak for the (rumoured) launch of its latest flagship phone, the Optimus G2.  The invite is clad in black silk and reads “Great 2 have you! Place_New York City Date_August 7 2013.” The text at the bottom are invite specific details blurred out to protect the identity of each guest. The invite is easy to decipher, leaving only the teaser video to keep us motivated until next month August. To me, you are perfect — from G There’s not too much known about the upcoming LG Optimus G2, besides the fact that the original G...
