  • eSports, rAge and the development of South African competitive gaming

When I was growing up there was no such thing as competitive gaming or eSports. Video games? You grew out of them when you became an adult. LOL! I wouldn’t have a career if it weren’t for video games, and I have no doubt that if anyone had come to me and told me I could play games professionally as a sport, I would have practised a hell of a lot harder! The great thing now of course is that these things are a reality. You can get your South African colours in vidya gamez. For realzies. And a couple of weekends...

  • rAge 2016: 31 photographs from this year’s expo

Taking place from 7 to 9 October 2016, rAge 2016 was one of the biggest editions in the event's history. Filled with new games, new hardware and a fresh focus on virtual reality, a slew of Johannesburgers and other gamers from across the country descended on The Dome to enjoy the festivities. What festivities, you ask? Well, beyond the news games and hardware on show, cosplay, board games, and professional eSports also featured. rAge 2016: who got their share of R1m for Telkom DGL? • rAge 2016: who got their share of R1m for Telkom DGL?

This past weekend saw the Masters Final of Telkom DGL (Digital Gaming League) take place at rAge 2016, as top players slugged it out in Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). The event had a total prize pool of R1-million, so who hit the jackpot then? In Dota 2, White Rabbit Gaming claimed the R200 000 top prize after beating Bravado Gaming in the finals. But Bravado didn't walk away empty handed here, netting a second place prize of R90 000. In CS:GO, Bravado Gaming went one better and earned the R200 000 winner's prize, beating CarboN eSports (who earned R90 000 for...

  • Telkom DGL, CWL & more: here’s your rAge 2016 eSport calendar

If you can't make it to Northgate, Johannesburg for rAge 2016 this weekend, fret not. You might be missing out on all the cosplay, new game demos and the NAG LAN, but at least you can watch the live eSport action taking place at the expo. Three headline tournaments spanning the next-gen consoles and PC gaming world will be on show, including the DGL, CWL and ACE. But if you aren't one for acronyms, and want to know how to keep track of these tournaments from the comfort of your fluffy lounge suite, check out the links below. • rAge 2016: 8 quick tips to keep in mind

Cape Town has already received rAge this year, but we all know that was a token effort. The real deal kicks off this weekend as rAge 2016 opens up in Northgate at the Coca Cola Ticketpro Dome. You don't want to be unprepared though, so here are a few tips to bear in mind (most courtesy of Graham van der Made!) when packing your bags. Bring a backpack One of the highlights of rAge is the sheer amount of discounted goods on offer. So it stands to reason then that you'll want to bring a backpack to load up on items. Of course, the other...

  • rAge 2016 Cape Town: how to improve on next year’s event

The first ever rAge Cape Town event has come and gone. The crowds dissipated, the stalls have packed up, and GrandWest Casino has returned to normality once more. From our visit, the long-time-coming event looked to be a success, but under all of the LAN cables and banners there is still room for improvement for next year's edition. We spent quite some time at rAge 2016 Cape Town and had the opportunity to scrutinise, as well as 'oooh' and 'ahh', everything in the venue. From what we're seen, and people we've spoken to, here are several ways in which the...

  • Special Podcast #18: we talk rAge 2016 Cape Town

This week we bring you yet another edition of Special Podcast, as we discuss rAge 2016 Cape Town, that took place this past weekend in GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World. Senior Reporter Stuart Thomas talks to Gearburn Editor Andy Walker and Reporter Graham van der Made about the first rAge gaming expo to take place in Cape Town. The city has been waiting for rAge for 13 years but on the weekend of the 18, 19 and 20 March 2016, it finally took place. On its website, rAge claims that it is South Africa’s biggest annual video gaming, computer, technology and...

  • rAge 2016 Cape Town: 3 standout artists from Artist Alley

The Really Awesome Gaming Expo, or rAge, may be a meeting place of comic book nerds, video game geeks and tabletop trekkies (could not think of another nerdy word to use and trekkies is alliterative in that context so at least I'm being creative, and speaking of creativity) it is also a place for some fantastic fan art. The artist's alley was not particularly large this year, but what was on display was more than enough for my measly wallet. Here are the three standout acts in Artist Alley this year: Inks M.D Extremely intricate and mesmerising fan artwork isn't exactly an...

  • Miss rAge Cape Town 2016? Here’s the video recap

This month saw South Africa's largest gaming convention spread its roots to the south of the country. GrandWest hosted Cape Town's first ever rAge gaming expo and it was an interesting gauge of Cape Town's gaming hunger. Did it live up to our expectations? You can have a listen to what we thought in our Special Podcast, or you can read about the ways next year's event can improve. But considering that it's a Friday, and video really rocks, have a look at our post-event video recap below. Also, if you're in the video, let us know in the comments, or be sure...
