  • Samsung Galaxy S9 outsold the iPhone X globally in April 2018

According to research from data firm Counterpoint, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are the world's biggest selling smartphones in April 2018. The two devices beat Apple's 2018 smartphone arsenal -- the iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8 -- by a little over 0.3% market share. Notably though, the next most popular device came from Xiaomi, in the Redmi 5A. But it's not the only Xiaomi on the list. Flanking the iPhone 6 -- yes, and it's outselling the iPhone 7 -- is the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Note 5 Plus. "This is the first time Xiaomi grabbed two positions within...

  • Galaxy S9 disassembled, gets 4/10 rating from repair website iFixit

Flagship smartphones generally have a reputation for being difficult to repair, so is there any surprise that iFixit has delivered a four out of 10 rating for the larger Galaxy S9? The repair-focused website disassembled the plus-model Samsung flagship, finding it similarly tough to repair as the Galaxy S8 and S8+. In fact, between opening the device, detaching the display and removing the fingerprint scanner, the website noted that glue was a big problem. Ultimately, the Galaxy S9+ was criticised for its screen repair difficulty, as well as the "unnecessary challenge" of replacing the battery. By comparison, the iPhone X received a...

  • Galaxy S9 now official, packing Sony-style slow-mo and more

Samsung's Galaxy S9 has officially been unveiled, coming in Galaxy S9 and S9+ flavours. And all the recent leaks were true, from super slow-mo at 960fps (the same as Sony's flagships) to the design. Starting with the camera, we see the 960fps slow-mo come into effect, equalling Sony's 720p resolution as well. The slow-mo option records 0.2 seconds of slow-mo, equal to six seconds of playback -- slightly more than Sony's just over 0.1 seconds of recording. In other words, those hoping for more traditional slow-motion capture experience (i.e. choosing which bit to turn into slow-mo) might be disappointed again. But...

  • Galaxy S9: Is Samsung matching Sony’s super slow-mo feature?

We're just a few days away from the Samsung Galaxy S9 reveal, and the leaks are coming thick and fast right now. The latest one comes from the reputable WinFuture website (German language), bringing with it a host of details. A lot of the information corroborates previous leaks, so that means a dual-camera setup on the S9+, a main camera that can switch between f/1.5 and f/2.4, Exynos 8910 or Snapdragon 845 chipset, stereo speaker, 5.8-inch 2960x1440 display for the standard Galaxy S9 and 6.2-inch 2960x1440 display and 3500mAh battery for the larger model. Probably the biggest nugget of information is...

  • Galaxy S9 leaks: camera, horsepower, design confirmed

The Samsung Galaxy S9 is set to make an appearance at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 but, with less than a month to go, we now have a load of key details. According to serial tipster Evan Blass, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be powered by a Snapdragon 845 in the USA and an Exynos 8910 elsewhere. But that's not surprising, right? Blass also reports that the vanilla model will pack a single 12MP camera, while the plus-sized variant will offer a dual-camera setup. But the primary cameras on both phones will feature a variable aperture, switching between f/1.5 and...

  • Galaxy S9 gets 25 February launch date, set for MWC

Samsung's Galaxy S9 is a no-brainer obviously, but the question is when? Late last year, we heard that it might make a cameo at CES 2018, but that didn't seem to pan out. Now, Samsung has officially confirmed a Mobile World Congress (MWC) date for the smartphone, launching on 25 February in Barcelona. "If a picture is worth a thousand words, the latest member of the Galaxy family has a lot to say. On 25 February, Samsung Electronics will showcase the next generation of Galaxy devices that reimagines the camera and redefines the way you share your moments," the company wrote...

  • Samsung W2018 has a feature that might come to Galaxy S9

Last month, the Samsung W2018 smartphone hit the Chinese market, being the latest Samsung flip phone to launch. Aside from being a flip phone, the device also packs a rather unique feature, in the form of a variable aperture camera. The aperture is capable of automatically switching from f/1.5 to f/2.4 and back again, seemingly a sort of middle ground between fixed apertures seen in smartphones and variable apertures seen in many SLR cameras. And if a recent image hasn't been faked, then the Galaxy S9 is expected to pack the same technology, down to the same aperture sizes. So why would...

  • Galaxy S9 reveal set for MWC – report

Samsung's Galaxy S9 is one of the most eagerly anticipated smartphones of the year, but when will we actually see it being revealed? Now, Samsung mobile head DJ Koh told Korean press at CES that the flagship would be revealed at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, ZDNet reported. It would mark a return to MWC for Samsung, having launched the Galaxy S7 there, but holding its own event for the Galaxy S8. As for features, previous leaks point to more of the same for the new flagships, featuring a similar high screen/body ratio and tall screen as the 2017 models. However, serial...

  • Exynos 9810: specs emerge for Galaxy S9 chip

The Exynos 9810 was quietly revealed last month, being the latest flagship processor for Samsung's smartphones. Details were light on the ground at the time, but Samsung has since published a full list of specs on its website. In terms of CPU power, you're looking at four third-generation custom cores (presumably keeping the Mongoose name) clocked at 2.9Ghz, as well four new A55 cores (1.9Ghz) for lightweight tasks. As for graphics, Samsung has opted for ARM's Mali G72 GPU, being the same hardware seen in Huawei's Kirin 970 chip. However, as has become tradition, Samsung is using more cores (18, in...

  • Galaxy S9 to build on S8, make CES cameo – report

Samsung's Galaxy S8 (review) is one of the best all-round smartphones of 2017, offering an excellent camera, top-notch screen and water-resistance (just don't mention the fingerprint scanner). The phone also stood out thanks to its high screen/body ratio, featuring those tiny borders popularised by Xiaomi's Mi Mix. Now, Venturebeat and Evan Blass report that the Galaxy S9 and S9+ are set to be an iterative upgrade, currently codenamed Star 1 and Star 2. They're "nearly identical" to this year's flagships, featuring the same 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch curved screen designs (headphone jacks are expected to stay). However, the S9+ is expected to pack a...
