  • The Gearburn Podcast #5: goodbye 2016, and thanks for the games

This year hasn't been a great one. With the loss of many a brilliant soul, a few interesting choices in important elections, and a number of generally negative news stories for South Africa, we're glad to see the back of it. But one shining light at least has been 2016's games catalogue. We've seen a slew of titles embracing a number of genders, tackling political issues and even addressing the age-old tradition of farming. Some standouts worth mentioning includes the likes of Overwatch, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and No Man's Sky (at least for some people). Overwatch gave the world a...

  • Overwatch, Uncharted & Dark Souls: the 10 best games of the year (so far)

We are now half way through the year -- can you believe it? It always kind of sneaks up on you, and in this industry, the games that you thought were so far away from release are suddenly upon you, taunting you with their price tags… There have however been some pretty spectacular ones so far, and this is that list! Overwatch Honestly, Overwatch is not particularly original. It’s a multiplayer FPS with some standard archetypes. It is however, a ridiculous amount of fun! The cartoon styling looks beautiful, the action is fast paced and actively promotes teamwork. DOOM DOOM has a long history...

  • Uncharted 4 ships 2.7m copies in week one, Sony oh so happy

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End was always going to be a big game. It's the end (if you believe that) of a saga that has spanned nearly a decade, and has a following that's probably a lot longer than that too. But it seems that Naughty Dog's latest game has surprised even Sony. Sony's SIE division has announced that the game has shipped 2.7-million units in its first week. Notably, it's now the fastest selling first-party title on PlayStation 4. "Thank you to the team at Naughty Dog for delivering Uncharted 4, a stunning experience that sets a new bar for...

  • Uncharted 4 preview: the necessity of narrative, the bonus of beauty

I'm not a huge fan of Nathan Drake (that's right, let's start this piece on a bombshell). In fact, I think he's among the most annoying, arrogant and apathetic characters in gaming, at least judging by the previous instalments of the Uncharted series. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End goes on sale this week, and we can only imagine how excited the host of PlayStation aficionados are. Naughty Dog and Sony are probably fairly giddy too, because this is easily the biggest PlayStation launch of the year (sorry Bloodborne). But the real question is, is the game worth picking up at launch?...

  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End looks simply stunning on the PlayStation 4

Read our preview here: Uncharted 4 preview: the necessity of narrative, the bonus of beauty The third act is the hardest to follow, but it seems that Naughty Dog has at least done a successful job on the visuals front. That's right, we're talking about Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, arguably the biggest release on PlayStation 4 this year so far (and likely for the rest of the year). One impressive thing about the game is how it rings the neck of the PlayStation 4 hardware, without taking it to the point of nervous breakdown. In other words, it's a simply gorgeous...

  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End delayed again, now penned for 10 May

Uncharted fans: grab that Nathan Drake pillow and squeeze, because Sony and Naughty Dog have pushed back the launch date of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End yet again. Initially scheduled to debut late in 2015, the game was given a concrete 26 April release date soon after. Now, you'll won't be able to get the game until 10 May. According to bigwigs, the delay isn't subject to the game's lack of polish, but to ensure that there are enough copies to go around. Sony and Naughty Dog clearly believe that the last sequel in the Nathan Drake saga will be a...
