  • Vodacom launches two new budget smartphones at solid prices

Last year saw Vodacom launch the Smart Platinum 7, the Kicka 2 and a host of other solid smartphones. Now, we've got two more smartphones coming from the network. According to Bandwidth Blog, the two phones are the Smart V8 and Smart N8, coming from Vodafone. The former is the more expensive model, packing a lower mid-range Snapdragon 435 processor (octacore A53), 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. Other noteworthy specs include a 16MP main camera, 8MP selfie shooter, 3000mAh battery and a 5.5-inch full HD screen. The Smart V8 will set you back R3599 on prepaid, or R299 a...

  • Tizen-powered Samsung Z2 coming to Vodacom

Here's an interesting little story. Among the iPhone 7 kerfuffle and heated Samsung Note issues, Vodacom has announced that the Samsung Z2 will be available on its network this month. It's a pretty big deal for those who love using alternative OSes on smartphones, as the Z2 uses Samsung's Tizen OS. In January 2016, Tizen ranked as fourth popular in the world, behind Android, iOS and Windows, and also runs on the likes of Samsung's Gear S2 and S3 smartwatches. On paper, the Samsung Z2 isn't a real clock stopper. Samsung Z2's arrival marks the first noticeable appearance of Tizen phones in South...

  • Yep, Vodacom reveals Smart Platinum 7 and six other devices

True to our story on Monday, Vodacom has revealed the Smart Platinum 7, being the first high-end Vodacom-branded smartphone. The handset features a Snapdragon 652 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage and a 5.5-inch 2560x1440 AMOLED display. In other words, it's several steps above previous Vodacom-branded smartphones and compares favourably to rival devices (Snapdragon 652 aside). The Smart Platinum 7 also packs a 3000mAh battery, rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, 16MP F2.0 main camera (with 4K recording and a dedicated camera button) and an 8MP selfie shooter with flash. In a rather cool move, Vodacom is also tossing in a VR headset with every...

  • Details revealed: Smart Platinum 7 is Vodacom’s new high-end phone

Local network Vodacom has teased a new high-end smartphone in its portfolio, reportedly scheduled for a reveal on 5 July (tomorrow). Fortunately, the teaser clip, uploaded by local tech writer Papi Mabele, gave us just enough information to identify the device, dubbed the Smart Platinum 7. Some of the more important bits teased are the camera (16MP, f/2.0 aperture, 1.12 micron pixels, phase detection autofocus), an image of a fingerprint scanner and a few shots of the phone itself. We already know that Vodacom gets some of its devices from Vodafone, so a quick Google search for "Vodafone 16MP camera" gives us... the Vodafone Smart Platinum 7. In...

  • Vodacom Smart 6 review: not quite six of the best

Budget Android phones have really changed the smartphone market for the better. Not only do they force manufacturers to launch cheaper but better phones, they also give consumers a fairly decent alternative to the overkill flagship and mid-range devices. Vodacom's one of the pioneers of this movement in South Africa most notably with the Smart Kicka, a R499 phone that could almost kick it with the big boys in terms of app availability. Not everyone wants to spend R5000 plus on a smartphone, and these give consumers a viable alternative. So when Vodacom launched its Smart 6, which is essentially an...

  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ will boast massive South African price tag

Numbers aren't scary when sitting lonely upon a page lacking context, but the new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ price will definitely cause a few die-hard Samsung fans to cower in the corner. Vodacom has announced the pricing for one of Samsung's many flagship smartphones, and it's quite exorbitant. Exorbitant you, ask? I mean R14 879. To put this into perspective, we thought that the R11k Samsung Galaxy S6 was expensive, with the iPhone 6 now available for under R9000 if you peek in the right places. The reason for the price hike over the base Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (pictured above) is the...

  • Vodacom, CTSB help the blind through new smartphone technology, kiosks

Smartphones are everywhere and a large part of our society. Year on year smartphone usage is overtaking traditional desktop platforms. For most of us using one of these devices the smooth screen and lack of buttons have become second-nature. Yes, it probably took some time to adapt from traditional button phones -- my adjustment took a while. For Visually Impaired People (VIP) it's a completely different story, and an area requiring more awareness. Like those of us who have sight, VIPs want the latest technology -- more specifically smartphones -- as well. The devices hold a robust range of features...

  • Vodacom Smart 6 is the company’s latest R799 budget smartphone

It has been a while since we've seen a new smartphone from Vodacom, one of South Africa's largest cellular providers, but the silence has been broken by a new entry into the budget smartphone world. The company has today announced the availability of the Vodacom Smart 6 smartphone, which comes with a few added extras courtesy of the company's telecom's prowess. In terms of hardware, the Vodacom Smart 6 seems like every other 4.0-inch budget handset making the rounds at the moment -- it doesn't sound all that interesting. It runs on Android KitKat and boasts a 800x400 WVGA display....
