  • Vodafone show commitment to Windows Phone 8

Windows Phone 8 devices will be available from 6 February in the UK via Vodafone. The Nokia Lumia 920, 820 and 620, as well as the HTC 8X and 8S (Vodafone calls it the ‘new Windows Phone 8 army’), will be the new models that will take the move forward. With the Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X, Vodafone and Microsoft have two smartphones that can compete with the best in the high scale. The Lumia has the edge slightly with Nokia Maps, City lens, and it’s PureView camera that “captures images like never seen before”, yet the HTC...

  • WP8 powered Samsung Ativ S finally makes 2012 release deadline

It appears that Samsung’s flagship Windows Phone 8 device, the Ativ S is finally set to make its 2012 release deadline. We initially reported that the Ativ S’ release had been delayed due to Samsung prioritising Galaxy S III production. That is no longer the case, as retailers in Canada and the UK have listed the Ativ S for release on 14 December at the US$599 mark. The Canadian details came courtesy of an internal document leak from Mobile Syrup, who also say three national carriers have a similar availability timeline of 14 December. The Great White North is not the...

  • Windows Phone 8 Portico update begins OTA roll out to HTC 8X

The rumoured Windows Phone 8 update has begun rolling out to select HTC 8X users according to WP Central. The update which we initially thought to be named Apollo Plus, is now dubbed “Portico”, keeping in line with the Windows Phone OS trend of names ending in “O”. This update was also believed to be rolling out in early 2013, but it appears 8X users will experience the love before others. The new features seem to extend exclusively to text messaging with SMS Drafts, SMS Call Reject and Mass SMS Deletion. None of these additions are ground breaking, but...

  • HTC 8S’ always-on Wi-Fi points to new feature in Apollo Plus update

HTC’s second Windows Phone 8 specific device, the 8S, currently runs an always-on Wi-Fi connection, non-existent in other WP8 smartphones. This always-on Wi-Fi feature essentially means users Wi-Fi connection will remain active even in lock screen mode. Windows Phone Program Manager Joe Belfiore, who we’re all familiar with from the WP8 event 29 October, said an always-on Wi-Fi setting would be a part of the first update for Windows Phone 8. We initially reported that the first update, dubbed Apollo Plus, for Windows Phone 8 would be rolling out to users January 2013. However full details on the updates contents...

  • Meet the Lumia 620: Nokia’s $249 WP8 powered smartphone

Nokia unveiled its latest Windows Phone 8 offering at Le Web in Paris earlier today. The Finnish manufacturer says this newest addition to its smartphone lineup is designed to appeal to younger consumers. Key aspects in the 620’s design has seen Nokia “softening the roundness and radius of the product” in an attempt to create a more tactile and organic feel, according to the company’s Executive Vice President of Design, Marko Ahtisaari. Specs for the Lumia 620 include a 3.8-inch WVGA display supported by a Qualcomm S4 processor clocked at 1Ghz and 512MB RAM. Other features see the Lumia 620 fitted...

  • HTC’s Titan III rumoured to be new WP8 flagship

Update According to reports on WP Central, Microsoft has officially stated that the listing of the HTC Titan III seen by Xbox Live users was a typo. The post was intended to say Titan II. We’ll take Microsoft at its word for now, but the question still begs. Why list the Titan II? which runs WP 7.5, when HTC have released the 8X, which runs WP8. Doesn’t quite make sense, we’ll be sure to keep all readers of the Gear updated on further developments. HTC may have another WP8 device up its sleeve with rumours regarding the Titan III doing...

  • HTC HD2 hacked to run WP 8, pokes hole in Microsoft’s hardware claim

The HTC HD2 has defied the odds once again. It’s a little known fact that this smartphone, which originally made its debut in 2009 running Windows Mobile 6.5, has now been hacked to operate with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 OS courtesy of hackers extraordinaire Dark Forces Team. This is not the first time that the HD2 has been modified by DFT, having setup the once flagship smartphone to run every single iteration of Windows’ mobile OS since 2009. Pretty impressive considering Microsoft’s statements that older models still running Windows Phone 7 will be unable to receive a download of...

  • WP8 powered Ativ S delayed as Samsung prioritise Galaxy S III

Samsung were the first manufacturers to unveil a WP8 device with the Ativ S in August at IFA 2012, but it looks set to be the last to reach consumers. The Ativ S was one the many newly designed Windows Phone 8 smartphones shown off by Steve Ballmer at a WP8 event in October. According to Sam Mobile, the device has suffered another delay, now scheduled for a late December release. Week 52 to be more precise, just in time to usher in the new year. The reason for the delay lies with the display, it appears that the top brass...

  • WP 8 reboot bug being patched come December

Early adoption is often fraught with peril, in this case for Windows Phone 8 users, it took the guise of devices randomly rebooting on multiple occasions. Disgruntled users took to the forums to voice their displeasure. When we first reported on this issue, Microsoft had done little to address the problem. The company has now stepped up to the plate and acknowledged the rebooting anomaly that many WP8 users experienced in the past few weeks, particularly HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 920 owners. Microsoft has released a statement saying: We’re continuing to investigate some reports of phones rebooting and have...

  • Windows Phone 8 update, Apollo Plus rumoured for early 2013 release

Microsoft is rumoured to release the first Windows Phone 8 update during first quarter 2013. The rumoured update is named Apollo Plus (we can just smell the patriotism), this information comes courtesy of a tweet from @Football4PDA. I know what you’re thinking, doesn’t sound like the most credible of Twitter handles, but this account is pretty legit. It released the design specs for the HTC Accord (now Windows Phone 8X) a couple of months before its official release, so the tweet checks out. MS is going to roll out update for WP8 which is called Apollo+ in Q1 2013… — Football (@Football4PDA)...
