Remote Play with the PS4 and PC.

New PS4 update launches tomorrow, brings PC/Mac Remote Play

Sony has been hard at work with its latest PlayStation 4 update, but it’s finally ready for primetime.

The 3.50 update gets pushed out tomorrow, Sony’s Jayne Murphy said in a blog post, so what can we expect?

Easily the biggest feature is Remote Play for PC and Mac computers, allowing users to stream games from their PS4 to a computer.

This mirrors Microsoft’s own solution, which allows gamers to play Xbox One games on a Windows 10 PC.

As for minimum requirements, Sony merely recommends a PC with Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 and a Mac with OS X 10.10 or 10.11.

Sony has also revealed the ability to toggle between 360p, 540p and 720p streaming settings and the ability to switch between 30 and 60 frames per second. Don’t want to faff about with settings? Then Remote Play defaults to 720p and 30 frames per second.

Interestingly enough, it’s not the first time that PS4-to-PC streaming has been accomplished, as enterprising developers managed to beat Sony to the punch. The unofficial solution even includes support for a keyboard and mouse.

Other features in Sony’s 3.50 update include the ability to appear offline, notifications when certain friends are online and game session scheduling.
