Xbox One S now up for pre-order in SA with no release date [Update: 13 April]

Update: Raru has tweeted that the Xbox One S is launching on 13 April in South Africa, making for a significant delay compared to other locales.

Original article: It’s taken a while for the Xbox One S revision to (sort of) make it to SA shores. The device is now up for pre-order on a number of stores, but there’s no date as to when it’ll actually arrive.

The console will set you back R4999 for the 500GB model and R5999 for the 1TB edition. These base units don’t come with much, except for a few cables and the revised Xbox Ons S controller, which features Bluetooth.

Local Microsoft video game distributor, Prima Interactive, is sweetening the deal with these pre-orders by including an additional controller, and either a copy of FIFA 17 or a one-year Xbox Live subscription.

Asking consumers to pre-order a console with no local release date is an interesting move, not to mention Nintendo’s Switch will be out in two weeks. It must also be noted that the device has been cheaper directly from Amazon UK (under R4000 for a 500GB with shipping included) when the retailer has run specials.

The Xbox One S is 40% slimmer than the original model, supports Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, and HDR. It’s also slightly more powerful, doesn’t need the bulky power brick, and is available in a stylish white colour.

So this could potentially take a whole month or more before you get it..?

While it is cheaper from Amazon UK (or US), don’t forget there would still be VAT and customs to pay once it arrives. The VAT alone would come out to about R600, with some other charges that will inevitably be slapped on there goes the price difference. It’s quite annoying how overpriced it is here. The One S bundle with Forza Horizon 3 from Amazon US comes out to R3800! Versus a similar bundle that would be around R5000 here. Again, shipping and customs will negate the difference but it just shows how much better for locals it is overseas.

  • With specials likes this one (http://www.cheapgamer.co.za/xbox-one-s-500gb-console-minecraft-r3666-amazon-uk/) all of the shipping and fees are included and you only pay once. That’s how I got mine.
