Telkom launches VS Gaming, standalone esports company

Telkom has formed a standalone company dedicated to esports, called VS Gaming, effectively replacing its Digital Gaming League (DGL) operation.

According to a press release sent to Gearburn, the new company is led by Cambridge Mokonyane, who had previously served as Telkom’s head of brand for more than three years.

“Telkom pioneered esports in South Africa, but with its tremendous growth, we realised that it needed to be a stand-alone entity to give it the focus, energy and attention it deserves. This new entity will have the backing of Telkom to further expand esports in South Africa,” Mokonyane was quoted as saying.

“The aim of VS Gaming is to grow the esports market while working together with other organisations to make it inspirational, profitable and professional. We continue the work of DGL to provide gamers of all levels with professional platforms to grow, learn and attract international exposure.”

Telkom has created a standalone company, dubbed VS Gaming, to handle esports in SA

Telkom and VS Gaming confirmed that existing tournaments and the Masters league would continue as before.

VS Gaming also used the opportunity to announce a FIFA 17 tournament at Gallagher Estate on 22-23 July. In fact, the company says it will be the “largest football e-tournament in Africa”.

The new company also revealed a partnership with Supersport to broadcast VS Gaming’s upcoming CS:GO and Dota 2 tournaments.
