Overwatch Xbox One X patch beats PS4 Pro – report

Overwatch has become one of the most popular cross-platform titles of this generation, delivering frantic multiplayer action, esport leagues and a host of characters.

Blizzard has been hard at work on a patch for the Xbox One X though and, according to Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry, it beats the base console and the PS4 Pro in terms of fidelity.

Oddly enough, the PS4 Pro version of the game only got 4K HUDs, with the rest of the game sticking for regular 1080p resolution.

The Xbox One X patch enables a 4K scaler, which means the game will hit 4K in less intense moments, but will drop resolution to maintain a smooth framerate in demanding scenes. In fact, Digital Foundry noted that the game dropped to as low as 2112 by 2160.

Looking for the sharpest version of Overwatch on consoles? Then you’ll want the Xbox One X version

“This reveals how the scaler works; the vertical resolution of 2160 pixels stays locked in place no matter what happens on-screen. That 2112×2160 lower bounds of our sample range accounts for 55 per cent of a full 4K. The still represents a huge jump over the dynamic 1080p on a standard Xbox One, and X hardware gives us the sharpest looking take on Overwatch on console,” the website elaborated.

The publication found that proper 4K throughout the game isn’t going to happen then, but “2752×2160, or 71 per cent of 4K” was the most consistent resolution they ran into.

Digital Foundry also went back to the PS4 Pro version of the game, finding that it was still running at 1080p. In other words, the Xbox One X version is easily the sharper title — unless Blizzard releases another PS4 Pro patch.
