Fortnite is totally working again, Epic makes up for downtime with freebies

Epic Games is really, really sorry that you couldn’t play as much Fortnite: Battle Royale as you wanted to this week.

The game’s servers were either inaccessible or incredibly bumpy for much of Wednesday and Thursday after scheduled maintenance began around 9am Wednesday.

“Scheduled maintenance is currently in progress. We will provide updates as necessary,” the developer wrote on its status page.

On Thursday however, it seemed that the maintenance rather ruined some aspects of the game’s server performance, and users we’re struggling to log into the game.

“Login is currently blocked across all Epic endpoints, including games, websites, and the Epic Games Launcher. This is due to a database failure which we are working to resolve as quickly as possible. In a measure towards resolution, matchmaking will be blocked for a short period,” it wrote around 9pm Wednesday.

Eventually, by late Thursday, Fortnite was once again accessible across all platforms.

But Epic still feels really bad about the issue, and will award players freebies as an apology.

“It’s been no secret that over the past 24 hours we’ve been experiencing issues with our services that have prevented many of you from playing Battle Royale and Save the World. We’re sorry. We know how frustrating this has been,” it wrote in a Thursday blog update.

The freebies include:

  • For Battle Royale players, this weekend we’ll be offering a Back Bling gift that you can pick up in the store for free.
  • For our Save the World folks, this weekend we will be offering a Troll Stash Llama in the loot tab for free.

But gamers will have to brace themselves for some more Fortnite server blips next week, Epic warns.

“Next week, we will be granting a pack of Battle Stars to our Battle Royale players and Seasonal Gold to the Save the World players. This will require brief additional downtime, so we will be including it as a part of our planned update next week.”
