  • 3 upcoming alternatives to Samsung Galaxy S8

Samsung is ready to officially reveal the Galaxy S8 today, and we have a good idea of what to expect already. There's the high screen/body ratio, Exynos 8895 chipset (or Snapdragon 835), an improved 12MP main camera, IP68 water resistance, Bixby AI assistant and more. But what if you're not a Samsung fan? Or the Galaxy S8 is underwhelming? Or maybe you just want to assess all your upgrade options? Here are three high-end smartphones set to hit South Africa (and/or the world) in the coming months. Sony Xperia XZ Premium This one doesn't even have a local release window or price yet,...

  • Should we expect refurbished Galaxy Note 7 in SA?

Samsung confirmed earlier this week that it would be selling refurbished Galaxy Note 7 devices in several unspecified markets. The move is part of several steps the company will undertake to recycle and process the existing stock. The other two processes will see Samsung remove metals in devices and reuse several components. "The markets and release dates will be determined accordingly," Samsung said at the time. But could we see these devices in South Africa? We asked Samsung SA's representatives. "Please note that Samsung SA never officially launched the Note 7 handset in the market and therefore the statement is not applicable to our market,"...

  • Apple iOS 10.3 released: find lost AirPods, get cricket scores

Apple has just pushed out iOS 10.3 for iPhones and iPads, bringing a number of notable features in the process. For starters, you can now use the Find My iPhone app to find your lost AirPods, being an oft-requested feature since the release of the audio hardware. Of course, you can also play a sound on the misplaced AirPods to help you find them. Siri has also received a number of features, such as scheduling with ride-booking apps, paying/checking bills in conjunction with payment apps, cricket scores for IPL and ICC matches and remotely mucking about with supported car apps (checking...

  • Dodgy Telefunken ‘full HD’ TVs recalled – report

Earlier this week, it was reported that a Telefunken 'full HD' TV sold by Game wasn't actually full HD. Instead of featuring a 1920x1080 resolution, the TVs topped out at 1366x768. The TV's packaging and the set itself all claimed to be full HD, but subsequent testing by MyBroadband reader Abu-Huraira Oman Abdalla revealed the HD-ready nature of the panel. Game's response to the revelation was rather concerning though. "There is no claim on native resolution, the unit is sold as a TV and not as a high-end monitor," the retailer was quoted as saying. Game will be initiating a recall on Telefunken 'full...

  • PS4 Pro to actually support 4K video in media player

It's rather weird that the PS4 Pro doesn't support 4K video files via the media player app, given the fact that 4K content is a big sell for the console. Now, Sony has announced that a new media player update will indeed enable 4K video. "Following this update, 4K videos in mp4 format saved on a USB stick or home server can be played on the Media Player app," the company wrote on its blog. Sony also reminds gamers that you can't use USB storage formatted for games and apps (extended storage) to play/store 4K video files. The media player update also has a...

  • Confirmed: Samsung to sell refurbished Galaxy Note 7

Last month saw a report that Samsung was planning to sell refurbished Galaxy Note 7 smartphones in some markets. Now, the South Korean firm has made it official, detailing its plans for the ill-fated phablet. The company made the announcement as part of "three principles" for recycling and processing the Galaxy Note 7. "First, devices shall be considered to be used as refurbished phones or rental phones where applicable," Samsung wrote on its website. "Regarding the Galaxy Note 7 devices as refurbished phones or rental phones, applicability is dependent upon consultations with regulatory authorities and carriers as well as due consideration of local demand. The markets and release dates will be determined accordingly." Samsung...

  • Moto X 2017 leaked: X range goes budget?

The Moto X phones have traditionally been Lenovo and Motorola's high-end handsets, until the Moto Z, that is. The Moto Z has since taken over flagship duties, but that doesn't mean Lenovo is ditching the Moto X though. Instead, the latest leaks, posted on Google+ and spotted by Android Police, suggest that the 2017 Moto X will be a mid-range handset in many ways. A system menu was shown off in one image, detailing the specs. So what do we have? There's an octacore Snapdragon 625 processor (MSM8953) and 3GB of RAM, for starters -- a capable combination but not something...

  • Telefunken ‘full HD’ TV actually not full HD – report

A South African man purchased a Telefunken 'full HD' television from Game, only to find that the TV's resolution topped out at 1366x768, and not 1920x1080. According to MyBroadband, Abu-Huraira Oman Abdalla purchased a 32-inch Telefunken TV set (model: TLEDD-32FHDB) from Game in KwaZulu-Natal and put it to the test. For the record, the TV packaging claims it's a "full HD" set, as does the branding on the TV itself. Abdalla connected the TV to his PC, finding a maximum resolution of 1366x768 -- there was no full HD (1920x1080) option. He then used the MonitorInfoView utility to get a more detailed overview of the...

  • Samsung Galaxy S8: what to expect ahead of Wednesday reveal?

The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge (review) were two of the industry's best smartphones last year, but the spectre of the Note 7 looms large ahead of the Galaxy S8 reveal. Samsung will hope to build on the critical and commercial acclaim of the S7 range, while also erasing memories of the ill-fated phablet. So how does the South Korean colossus plan to do this? Here's what you should expect ahead of Wednesday's reveal. A high screen/body ratio Samsung is expected to follow Xiaomi and LG by having super-thin bezels/borders. The leaks and marketing material certainly point to this being inevitable. As a result...

  • Starcraft Remastered is actually a thing now

It's been almost 20 years since the Starcraft franchise saw its first entry, now, Blizzard has announced Starcraft Remastered. So what should you expect? Blizzard confirmed that remastered visuals, "revised" dialogue and audio and comic book interludes are part of the overhauled title. The game will also come with the Brood War expansion. Don't expect a full-on upgrade in the visual department though, as higher resolutions are the biggest update here. So expect the same fundamental visuals, albeit with a cleaner look and widescreen support. The game has also seen a welcome upgrade in terms of online connectivity, delivering Blizzard's matchmaking and friends...
