  • Apple to retain Lightning port on 2017 iPhones?

A new report has refuted claims that Apple will be ditching the Lightning connector in favour of a USB Type-C port. Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal, citing "people familiar with the matter", reported that the Apple would use the Android and Macbook standard on its smartphone. "They said Apple would introduce other updates including a USB-C port for the power cord and other peripheral devices instead of the company's original Lightning connector," the publication was quoted as saying. At the time, we wondered whether this could mean an actual Type-C port on a new iPhone or on the power cable...

  • Who had the best smartphone at MWC 2017?

Mobile World Congress (MWC) has come and gone, delivering smartphone announcements aplenty. But the real question is who "won" the annual exhibition, then? LG had its G6, looking to erase memories of the innovative but flawed G5 (review). Huawei had the P10, which looks like an evolution over the popular P9 (review). And we had the Nokia brand and its Android smartphones, courtesy of HMD Global. However, the GSMA has chosen Sony and its Xperia XZ Premium as the best smartphone of MWC 2017 at its annual Global Mobile (GloMo) Awards. And to be honest, it's not tough to see why. The Xperia...

  • Fire Pro Wrestling is back, set for release on PC, PS4

The WWE franchise tend to be the biggest game in town by default, but the Fire Pro Wrestling series has long been held by enthusiasts as the premiere grappling franchise around. Now, after ten years, a new title in the series, Fire Pro Wrestling World, has been announced. Featuring charming 2D visuals, a control scheme that emphasises timing over button-bashing and robust customisation (down to tweaking AI), the franchise is pretty much the opposite of other games in its sub-genre. And it seems like the latest title is set to continue in this vein, offering deathmatches (involving barbed wire, landmines and...

Esports has grown exponentially over the years, and South Africa has been no exception in this regard. From FIFA to Dota 2 and CounterStrike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), we've seen esports become firmly established locally. Heck, CS:GO matches have even been shown on Supersport. Now, a new CS:GO tournament is offering a R1-million prize pool as well as a Twitch partnership. Formed by local esports group Mettlestate, it's been branded as the "biggest prize of its kind for a single esports title in South Africa". Mettlestate originally held an exhibition match between Bravado Gaming and Energy Sports on 1 March 2017, streaming on its Twitch channel. "Once...

  • Nintendo Switch: what do reviewers think?

The Nintendo Switch finally launches tomorrow, promising a hybrid portable/home console experience after months of hype. Between Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, HD Rumble and seamless portable/TV play, the console seems to have a lot going for it. Now that the reviewers have been published globally, what do critics think of Nintendo's next great hope? Polygon "The Switch is Nintendo's second attempt at a tablet-based game console, quickly following the release -- and subsequent failure -- of the Wii U. Where that console’s approach mixed its hardware metaphors -- tethering a wireless display with a traditional console, and failing to...

  • Samsung Galaxy S8 render leaks, thin bezels in tow [Photo]

Samsung has done a fair job of keeping its Galaxy S8 under wraps, but serial leaker Evan Blass has once again shown off the goods before the official event. Blass published a render for the device to his Twitter account, revealing a smartphone with thin bezels, a curved screen and curved corners akin to the LG G6 (hands-on). I think this is what you've been waiting for. pic.twitter.com/FvYfsLOy0R — Evan Blass (@evleaks) March 1, 2017 The leaked render also points to the confirmed 29 March reveal date for the device, showing a 29 March date on the screen. A new report claims that Apple is expected to drop the Lightning connector on the iPhone in favour of USB Type-C connectivity. According to the Wall Street Journal (pay wall), citing "people familiar with the matter", the company intends to go with the standard used by Android phones and its Macbook line of computers.
