  • Here’s how to kill an Xbox One S and PS4 Pro in less than 10 minutes

We know exactly what you need just before the weekend: a rage inducing video. Note though, that EverythingApplePro's subscribers asked him to do this, but still, we couldn't help but shed a tear. The video in question, made by the YouTuber, takes a look at the battle between the Xbox One S, the PlayStation 4 Pro, the Apple TV 2016 and -- chief antagonist -- a USB killer stick. If you haven't heard of the latter, it's probably the most evil device ever made by computer nerds. Generally, inserting the stick into any device's USB port almost guarantees a fried...

  • Overwatch will be free-to-play on all platforms next weekend

In a move that'll make next weekend's choice of shooter even more complicated, Blizzard has announced that Overwatch will be free to play on the weekend of 18 November. "From November 18–21, we're putting out the call to any prospective agents: assemble your team and dive in during the Overwatch Free Weekend on PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One!," announced Blizzard on its Play Overwatch blog. "For this free weekend, we're making Overwatch's full roster of 22 heroes and 13 maps available for play in a variety of modes, including Quick Play, Custom Games, and the latest Weekly Brawl." Overwatch will be free...

  • Mass Effect Andromeda’s vague cinematic trailer outs on N7 Day

Mass Effect Andromeda, fittingly on N7 Day, finally has a new trailer... and it's a bit melodramatic. If you're into trailers that show absolutely no gameplay, and provides barely any background story, then this is your ticket. Yep. BioWare is still being extremely coy about it all. As far as we know, Mass Effect Andromeda will allow gamers to play as either Scott or Sarah Ryder -- Alec's two children. Alec, tasked with finding a new home of civilization after things went obviously pear-shaped, sees his final mission go pear-shaped as well. We still barely know anything about Mass Effect Andromeda's meat...

  • The Gearburn Podcast #4: is Nintendo Switch console gaming’s saviour?

If you're still pinching yourself after the Nintendo Switch announcement, worry not, because we are too. It's not every day that Kyoto announces something hardware related. Hell, it's not every day we get a new title announcement from the company. But last week, we saw the Nintendo Switch and a slew of new non-Nintendo titles running on it. It was one of the most exciting three minute trailers we've seen in ages. Learn more about Nintendo’s new home gaming system at the Nintendo Switch Presentation, streamed LIVE on Jan. 12 https://t.co/0c7gOJasA2 pic.twitter.com/5aR7MBH2C5 — Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) October 27, 2016 In The Gearburn Podcast this...

  • Nintendo Switch powered by Nvidia Tegra, custom APIs

A few months ago, we wrote a piece speculating that Nintendo could rope in Nvidia to help power its upcoming console. Today, Nvidia revealed that it is in fact the brains behind the Nintendo Switch. The Switch will use a custom Nvidia Tegra processor running on the Pascal architecture. This will also make it pretty simple to develop games on the console. That, and the new API the console employs. "The Nintendo Switch’s gaming experience is also supported by fully custom software, including a revamped physics engine, new libraries, advanced game tools and libraries," Nvidia claims on its blog. "NVIDIA additionally created...

  • Zelda: Breath of the Wild trailer drops before NX reveal

Oh Nintendo, you big tease. A mere hour before the big Nintendo NX reveal on YouTube, the company posted its latest trailer of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild -- the company's upcoming NX and Nintendo Wii U title -- on its Japanese YouTube channel. Breath of the Wild will be Nintendo's final Wii U Zelda title, and first for the Nintendo NX The game, which was showcased in depth at E3 2016, uses a quite gorgeous animation style, alongside new physics-based mechanics and what seems like a Ubisoft-like radio tower system (that last one was a joke, but...

  • RetroEpic bringing Flash Point: Fire Rescue board game to PC, iOS

SA game developer, RetroEpic, is bringing the widely popular board game Flash Point: Fire Rescue, to PC and iOS in 2017. The turn-based strategy game has players taking on the role of firefighters as they attempt to rescue seven to 10 victims from a burning building. During the game, the fire will spread, making it harder for the players to achieve their goals. Players will need to strategise as a range of hazards will block their way. RetroEpic's digital take on the game will include both solo and co-operative play, two different burning houses, and eight different firefighters, each with their own...

  • PlayStation 4 Pro listed on South Africa’s Raru for R6999

We're just a few months away from gaming on consoles at 4K (or something incredibly close to it) through the conduit of the PlayStation 4 Pro. Announced in early September 2016 at a New York event, the PlayStation 4 Pro will be Sony's most powerful gaming console ever launched, and probably the most powerful available for now. But how much will it cost, and when will it arrive in South Africa? Sony PS4 Pro launched, with PS4 Slim in tow Sony finally took the wraps off the PlayStation 4 Neo in New York last night, revealing that it would also be called...

  • The Gearburn Podcast #3: are big companies neglecting the budget smartphone space?

Hey you, using that swanky flagship over there, have you ever stopped to think if companies are doing enough for budget smartphone users? It's great if you can tote a R14 000 metal slab around, but what about those who can't? What about those users who need a simple, cheap and reliable tether to the digital world? In this week's episode, we focus chiefly on the budget smartphone space. Sure, it might not be as sexy as the Gorilla Glass- and USB Typc-C monsters atop the hierarchies, but they are important. If anything, when companies limit themselves to a strict...
