  • Snapchat Spectacles pulling a Galaxy Note 7?

Snapchat ventured into the world of hardware late last year with the limited release of Snapchat Spectacles. As the name implies, these are spectacles that allow users to take videos for the ephemeral mobile app. Now, at least one user has reported that the charging case for the device has melted. A customer, who didn't want to be named, told TechCrunch that the case had melted half an hour after being plugged in for charging. The customer said that they had connected the case to an Apple 5W charging adapter, having done so before. "About a half hour later, I got a burning smell....

  • This Belkin dongle lets you listen to music while charging the iPhone 7

In case you missed the news, Apple has decided to drop the 3.5mm audio jack on its iPhone 7 range, making for quite a negative reaction (unless you're a die-hard Apple fan or use wireless headphones). One of the more notable downsides is that you can't listen to music and charge your device at the same time. But third-party manufacturer Belkin has stepped up to the plate with a US$40 solution. The company's Lightning Audio + Charge RockStar accessory plugs into your Lightning port, effectively giving you two Lightning jacks. One is for your Lightning-equipped pair of earphones while the other can be used...

  • Razer Serval review: an overpriced mobile games controller

The smartphone controller industry is still somewhat in its infancy, reflected by the wide variety of options and brands on the market. But truth be told, acquiring a smartphone gamepad is still a dicey proposition in South Africa. Yes, despite Madcatz, MOGA and numerous other companies releasing mobile gamepads, it's become very difficult to find these in the country. Fortunately, Razer is on hand, as it gears up to release its Serval controller. Meant for the Razer Forge TV Android gaming console, Razer is also selling these controllers separately, but is it worth the cash? A solid design Before you unbox the controller,...

  • Libratone debuts new One and Too Bluetooth speakers

Audio technology company Libratone is launching three new portable wireless speakers to its existing more home focused range in a range of new Scandinavian inspired colours. Coming in Graphite Grey, Cloudy Grey and a vibrant Caribbean Green all units are brand new for 2016 and are available from today. The Libratone One Click is a mighty speaker that packs a punch visually with the rugged exterior, multiple accessories ports and rubber siding -- perfect for the more active user. Future accessories will be announced later in the year but expect wall suckers, mounts and other usual suspects. The second unit, the Libratone...

  • SanDisk iXpand drive review: selfie backups for your iOS device

As much as you may love your Apple iPhone or iPad, its limited storage capabilities can be a problem. Like others that have come before it, SanDisk has developed an expandable storage solution for iOS devices. The question is: should you pick it up over the competition? The SanDisk iXpand flash drive is a rather simple device in its presentation and design. The drive has a male USB 3.0 port on one end and a male Lightning connector on the other. These two connections are joined by a bendable plastic hinge. It doesn't move naturally and feels as though it may cause...

  • Houdt launches swanky wooden 2016 MacBook covers

Houdt, a South African accessory marque noted for its love of wood, has announced a new series of 2016 MacBook covers. "Inspired by the functional beauty of nature, the Houdt MacBook Cover range is designed to protect the top of your MacBook from everyday spills, bangs, bumps and scratches," the press release reads. The company's not exactly foreign to draping Apple products in wood either, as it has previously crafted covers for iPhones, as well as Samsung and Huawei devices too. The new MacBook covers though is perhaps the most expensive device the company has gone for thus far. Sizes covered range from 11.0-inches to the 15.0-inch...

  • Samsung launches $250 256GB EVO Plus microSD card

Samsung is pushing the limits of mobile storage cards with the launch of its new 256GB EVO Plus microSD card. The additional 56GB boost in standards comes after SanDisk launched its 200GB card in March. While that jump does seem arbitrary, it now means that this Samsung card is now the highest capacity unit in its class. And speaking of class, transfer speeds are fairly brisk as well. "The EVO Plus 256GB raises the bar for capacity and performance of microSD cards thanks to Samsung’s advanced V-NAND technology, offering high read and write speeds of up to 95MB/s and 90MB/s, respectively," the...

  • Thule Gauntlet 3.0 Attache review: more than just a MacBook tote

Airlines are clamping down on carry-on luggage with their "slimline laptop bag" laws, and while some love their good ol' backpacks using that as carry on, others with smaller laptops and tablets are opting for smaller cases and getting away with two bags on board. This was partly my testing methodology for the Thule Gauntlet. At 13.0-inches, it's meant to fit an Apple MacBook Pro in said form factor, but I didn't have one on hand. Besides, I imagine that Thule would encourage other laptop brand owners to use the Gauntlet (even if its marketing is squarely aimed at Cupertino...

  • Apex Interactive now official distributor of GUNNAR gear in SA

Announced today, video game and hardware distributor Apex Interactive will now distribute GUNNAR Optiks computer eyewear products in South Africa. The product ranges consist of gaming, outdoor, and prescription eyewear solutions. According to a press release sent to Gearburn, GUNNAR eyewear apparently defends against the short and long-term effects of digital eye strain, as well as Computer Vision Syndrome. "GUNNAR is the only patented computer eyewear recommended by doctors to protect and enhance your vision." The company has "pioneered the only patented lens technology to reduce digital eye strain and fatigue issues associated with computer use." GUNNAR had previously been distributed by Comet Computing in SA. Pricing and...

  • SanDisk announces iXpand storage unit for Apple iOS devices

One of the biggest problems with Apple iOS devices, besides their insane prices, is the lack of expandable storage. Like many manufacturers before them, SanDisk thinks it's got the product to solve users' iOS storage needs. The company recently announced the SanDisk iXpand for both iPhone and iPad devices. This little flash drive plugs into your device via its Lightnight port. Users can then use the SanDisk iXpand Sync app to back up a range of items on the phone to the flash drive, such as your camera roll, but not DRM content -- you'll have to speak to Apple...
