Here’s an interesting fact for you: 53% of all Facebook users play social games like FarmVille and Mafia Wars. Is that a surprise to you? Probably not. If you aren’t already chipping away at your workplace productivity trying to grow beets and raise sheep, then it’s a pretty fair bet you know someone who is. Social gaming is a global phenomenon. • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II [Xbox 360 Review]

Being a long time Star Wars geek and big fan of the first Force Unleashed game, I could hardly contain myself when I heard that a sequel was to be released this year. And at first glance my enthusiasm seemed completely justified. But before long, I was quickly reminded that things are not always as they seem. The core experience of The Force Unleashed II remains basically unchanged. Once again, you play Starkiller, secret apprentice to Darth Vader, and bringer of preposterous amounts of destruction through wielding the force as you have never seen it before... unless you played the...

  • Cubans unimpressed by ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ storyline

Cuba's state-run media and bloggers are not amused at "Call of Duty: Black Ops," a new videogame in which the player can join a secret operation in the 1960s to assassinate former leader Fidel Castro. "What the United States government did not manage to do in 50 years, now it attempts to accomplish by virtual means," said comments Wednesday on the website Cubadebate, where Castro regularly publishes opinion pieces. The site was referring to...

  • Enslaved: Odyssey to the West [Xbox Review]

I’m a sucker for post-apocalyptic sci-fi action, so when a post-post-apocalyptic storyline comes along, I tend to geek out hard and immerse myself in the ensuing tale. With a truly unique storyline, awesome boss-men, kickass wardrobe and incredibly rich character development, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is an honest to Kratos, O.G. (original game). Storyline: You begin the saga in a cryogenic holding pod, suggesting that your avatar is a prisoner or slave of sorts. After a malfunction of unknown origins, the futuristic prison/slave transport ship holding the convict begins to crash and the resulting mayhem sees the character breaking free...

In barely a year and a half, the iPhone has seized...

  • Social gaming: The hype is justified

There's no shortage of hype about social gaming at the moment, resulting in substantial buyouts of social gaming startups by large media conglomerates. The statistics are pointing to massive growth numbers, specifically around micro-payments and around the vast numbers of users playing social games on a daily basis. Martin Walfisz on Quora.com defines a social game as "a digital online game that: (1) uses a player's social graph to provide an enhanced game experience, (2) facilitates and encourages communication about the game while outside of the game; and, (3) has a minimal barrier to entry". Most definitions refer to a social...

  • Sony delays global release of Gran Turismo 5 again

Japan's Sony will again delay the global release of the latest version of its popular "Gran Turismo" car-racing game, which was due out early next month, officials said Thursday. Gran Turismo 5 for the PlayStation 3 video-game console was to hit US markets on November 2 and Japan the following day, but the release will now be "this holiday season", Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. said. The delay is due to "production reasons," said Makiko Noda, a spokeswoman for the electronics giant's game unit, without elaborating. The release of Gran Turismo 5 had already been delayed from March this year. Analysts say...
