  • Final Fantasy XIV’s 3.5 patch adds a tonne of content, changes

It's time to download a new patch for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and while it only weighs in at just over 900MB (on PS4), the update adds an incredible amount to the game. Firstly, if you don't have it yet, go and purchase the Heavensward expansion right now. Why? The new patch adds a slew of content to said expansion. Entitled The Far Edge of Fate, patch 3.5 adds a range of new high-level quests (Diabolos is back!), beast tribe quests, side-stories, and more goodies for the taking. There are also a slew of gameplay and UI tweaks in order to make the...

  • You really should be playing Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Turning not only one but two mainline Final Fantasy games into massively multiplayer online experiences is pretty crazy, right? Right. Except, that it’s not and may be some of the most interesting moves that Square Enix has ever done. Over the past few weeks I’ve been neck-deep in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and it may just be one of the best entries in the series. During the past decade or so I've been hesitant about MMO games due to bad and bland experiences (I’m looking at you, World of WarCraft and Lord of the Rings Online), but after...

  • Final Fantasy XV [PS4] review: Is it worth the wait?

It's been ten years since Square Enix announced the development of PlayStation 3 exclusive, Final Fantasy Versus XIII. In 2012, the title was rebranded to Final Fantasy XV, the next core entry in the critically acclaimed JRPG franchise. After a decade of waiting, should fans be excited about the long-awaited title, or denounce it as their own Final Fantasy? The game follows a close-knit band of friends on their way to get the future king of Lucis to his wife-to-be. Think of The Hangover, but with monsters and less alcohol. Noctis Lucis Caellum, the prince and king-to-be, might not be your favourite...

  • Final Fantasy XV breaks records with over 5m units sold

After 10 years in development, Final Fantasy XV (formerly Final Fantasy Versus XIII) was released on 29 November. It seems like the wait has paid off for Square Enix as over five million units of the game have been sold. According to a press release sent to Gearburn, this makes Final Fantasy XV the fastest-selling title in the series. The game went on to break the record for the number of digital downloads for a day-one release in Japan. In Asia, excluding Japan, it also smashed sales numbers for a combination of physical and digital titles sold on the day of release. Local allocation...

  • Final Fantasy XV delayed thanks to day-one patch

For better or worse, day-one updates have become the norm over the past few years. In saying so, there are a few big disadvantages to taking this route. Arguably the biggest downside is that you need an internet connection to grab the update, along with plenty of data. After all, patches can often be several gigabytes in size. Fortunately for those without a decent connection, Square Enix has opted to delay Final Fantasy XV's 30 September release in order to incorporate the day one update. Game director Hajime Tabata broke the news in a video uploaded to the Final Fantasy XV YouTube channel. "Our...

  • Pokemon Go, Humble Bundle and more: this week’s top mobile games

Welcome to Gearburn's Mobile Game Picks of the Week, a weekly series in which Hadlee takes a look at the latest, most entertaining, or time-consuming mobile games on portable screens. It's that time of the week again, so let's cut to the chase and talk mobile games. Our favourites this time are Pokemon Go and the new Humble Bundle -- but there are four other picks in this edition as well. Pokemon Go (free - Android, iOS) The eagerly anticipated game has been released in several countries so far, but South Africa isn't one of them just yet. Fortunately, thanks to APK Mirror, we've got a...

  • Final Fantasy XII is getting the HD remaster treatment on PS4

Sure, Final Fantasy VII gets most of the remake love among fans, but XII has its fair share of enthusiasts too. Fortunately, Square Enix seems to have listened to your pleas as the company has released a teaser trailer for Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, being a remastered version of FF12. Don't hold your breath for a release just yet, as Square Enix has confirmed a vague 2017 release date in Japan. The title was first released in 2006 on PlayStation 2, receiving critical acclaim. A sequel was released in 2007 in the form of Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings for the...

  • Final Fantasy X, X-2 HD Remaster is finally on PC

The remastered editions of Final Fantasy X and its sequel, Final Fantasy X-2, are now available for PC through steam. The combo is on sale for R255.20 and usually retails for R319. The HD Remaster includes graphical and music revisions of the games with the inclusion of 'International Edition' content not previously seen in certain versions of the PlayStation 2 release. So far, the games are receiving great reviews with an average of "VeryPositive" from Steam's measurement index. According to the Steam page, you should be running Windows Vista, a 2.4GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, an Nvidia GTX 450 / AMD Radeon...

  • Do you agree with WatchMojo’s top 10 RPG franchises?

If you've played video games for any amount of time, chances are you've either played or heard of role-playing games (RPGs). These titles usually involve over 50 hours of gameplay, character development, and constant battles. They're like real life, but fun. Listicle YouTube channel WatchMojo.com has put together a list of what it considers to be the best RPG franchises. These titles include a range of genres from JRPGs, such as Final Fantasy, to Western RPGs, like The Elder Scrolls. Strangely missing from the list are Tactical RPGs, such as Disgaea and Front Mission. It's surprising to find the Shin Megami...

  • Uncovered Final Fantasy XV event: the anime, the movie, the demo, the pinball

Aside from all of the core Final Fantasy XV content shown off at the Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV event, there were also some very interesting surprise announcements. How did Square Enix keep all of these a secret for so long? Firstly, and as with most FF titles, there will be an in-game mini game. Called Justice Monsters Five, this pinball title will not only be playable within FFXV, but also available to download for Windows 10, iOS, and Android devices in the coming future. There's no word if it will unlock bonuses withing FFXV. Next up is a brand new playable...
