  • We investigate: will Rich Capture land on HMD’s Nokia smartphones?

I've previously waxed lyrical about my love for Rich Capture/Rich HDR , one of the coolest smartphone camera features to see the light of day (at least when it worked). First seen in the Lumia range of phones, the feature allowed you to change the level of HDR, flash or exposure after you took a photo. So if you like pastel hues, you can crank the HDR up. Or you can find a happy medium between a flashless photo and a scene-blinding flash, check below for an example. Rich Capture with no flash. The...

  • A salute to a forgotten yet amazing smartphone camera feature

Smartphone photography has managed to improve dramatically in the last three years or so. Back in 2015, the likes of the Galaxy S5, LG G3 and other phones gave us a glimpse of what was to come. But it was the Lumia 830, Lumia 930 and Lumia 950 (Microsoft's last flagship smartphone) that were arguably the first to drive a future driven by software/computational photography, with the implementation of Rich Capture. In fact, we'd argue that Rich Capture is probably the most amazing (yet forgotten) camera feature in ages. Bear with me here. What is Rich Capture? The feature, which debuted on the Lumia 930, Lumia 1520 and...

  • Hacker brings Windows 10 ARM to Lumia smartphone

Windows 10 Mobile was a bit of a disaster for Microsoft, to say the least. Between the Android/iOS duopoly, app gap and the ridiculously unpolished nature in the first few months, there's little wonder why Microsoft has quietly killed it. Unfortunately, the Redmond company doesn't plan to bring Windows 10 ARM (the Windows 10 for mobile devices) to Lumia phones. But where there's a will, there's a way, and an enterprising hacker has apparently got Windows 10 ARM to boot up on the Lumia 950. • Pixel 2 XL vs Lumia 950 XL cameras: surprising results in tow

The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL cameras build on the excellent results by the original Pixel, making them among the top smartphone cameras of 2017. But how does the Pixel 2 XL compare to the two-year-old Lumia 950 XL? All About Windows Phone took a few comparison shots, showing an older phone that still delivers quality photos. Of course, with a name like All About Windows Phone, you'd expect the Microsoft device to emerge victorious, but the website was pretty detailed in its rundown. The publication took macro shots, daytime snaps, low-light pictures and more. When it came to daytime shots, like...

  • Scientists use Lumia 1020 to sequence DNA on the cheap

Scientists from UCLA and Sweden have successfully sequenced DNA using a modified Lumia 1020 smartphone. In a press statement, the institution said that DNA sequencing typically sees samples being sent to well-equipped facilities far away, representing a challenge for developing countries and underserved communities. But the smartphone-based microscope, developed by researchers at UCLA's California NanoSystems Institute and scientists from Stockholm University and Uppsala University, could reduce the need for expensive equipment. The device takes the form of a lightweight, 3D-printed optical attachment, fitted to the back of a Lumia 1020 and used in conjunction with the 41-megapixel camera. "The device can image and analyse specific DNA sequences...

  • Windows: Microsoft bringing x86 emulation to ARM?

Microsoft's Continuum for Phones feature seems cool on paper, allowing you to run your phone's universal Windows apps on a big screen to give a computer-like experience. The biggest issue is that legacy Windows apps simply don't work via this feature, leaving a big gap then. However, it seems like Microsoft is working on a solution, ZDNet reports, claiming a "fall 2017" launch date. The website's sources say the feature will be coming to Windows 10 as part of the Redstone 3 update next year. So what does the tech entail then? Full fledged Windows apps might make their way to mobile platforms...

  • The cancelled 3D Touch-toting Lumia McLaren gets full review

Microsoft and Nokia's cancelled Lumia McLaren handset is perhaps one of the most disappointing stories in the history of the Windows Phone platform. You know, aside from the platform's lack of success in general. Cancelled just a few months before its late 2014 release, the McLaren offered an innovative 3D Touch feature that was unlike anything we've ever seen on a mobile device since. While Apple's take on 3D Touch required users to press down on the screen, leaks and video footage showed that the McLaren's take required users to hover their finger over the display instead. Now, Windows Central has managed...

  • Watch Microsoft’s cancelled take on 3D Touch in ‘leaked’ video

A new video has emerged, purportedly showing some fancy "3D Hover Touch" functionality on Microsoft's cancelled McLaren smartphone. The handset, which was supposed to be released in Q4 2014, was cancelled earlier that year for unknown reasons. The cancellation meant that Microsoft was left without a high-end smartphone for almost two years, until the Lumia 950 and 950XL were released late last year. The phone was widely tipped to be packing some innovative display technology, allowing users to hover their fingers over the screen for certain features. Now, a video has emerged out of China, claiming to show this function on a prototype device. The video...

  • Microsoft drops first Lumia branded device: a cheap, colourful selfie-shooter

Microsoft's first branded Lumia has just been revealed. Sans the Nokia brand of course, the Lumia 535 is a low-cost, colourful smartphone with a grand focus on all the software Microsoft has to offer. Apart from the 5MP LED flash at the rear, the colourful selfie-shooter carries a 5MP front cam that's meant to be used alongside the Lumia Selfie App. The app enables you to "enhance" your selfies with filters and easily share them with friends from the app to OneDrive, Instagram, Twitter and so forth. The friendly five incher carries a quad-core 1.2GHz processor together with 1GB RAM, 8GB internal...

  • Ahead of IFA launch, someones leaked the Nokia Lumia 830

Microsoft had planned to surprise the world with the Lumia 830 at its IFA Berlin launch tomorrow, but the internet had other ideas, Chinese tech site WPDang in particular. Thanks to its sleuthing, we've got images of the Lumia 830, along with specifications. The Lumia 830 is a middle-of-the-road smartphone, slotting in between the Lumia 1020 and 930 in terms of raw power. It has a 5" 1280x720 resolution display, 4G LTE, a 10MP PureView camera squashed into the rear, "better grip feel", MicroUSB card slot, Snapdragon 400 CPU (which is fairly weak) and a removable battery. This Lumia (outfitted with Windows Phone...
