  • Fxtec’s Pro1 smartphone sports a sliding keyboard like the good old days

Phones with physical keyboards have long been usurped by traditional glass slab designs, and more recently foldables. But one company (besides BlackBerry) is hanging onto that QWERTY life. UK firm Fxtec at MWC 2019 unveiled its Pro1 slider, landscape and QWERTY keyboard smartphone. The device is a stark departure from what you usually see from the likes of BlackBerry, with a predominant landscape orientation and a 5.99 inch 2160x1080 AMOLED screen. The 64-key angled keyboard too itself slides below the screen, and is backlit. Internally, there are a few quirks. The phone uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chipset -- a two-year old flagship chip...

While the Xperia 1 was announced on Monday at MWC 2019, today Sony Mobile announced that its flagship Xperia 1 will arrive in South Africa in July 2019. Smartphone makers have officially lost their minds this year. Foldable devices, 5G support, crazy camera arrays. You name it, we've seen it at MWC 2019. Oh, big batteries, you ask? We've got that too thanks to Energizer. Everyone's favourite battery maker Energizer has made a phone with a large battery. A very large battery. 18 000mAh to be exact. https://twitter.com/rickyvtech/status/1100171471324934144 To put this into perspective, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus has a 4100mAh battery. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a 4200mAh battery. And the iPhone XS Max has a 3174mAh battery. With that large cell there is a trade off in weight and...

  • Gearburn’s MWC 2019 smartphone power rankings

We're barely into day two of MWC 2019 and already, we've seen a slew of new flagship smartphones from almost every big manufacturer. So how do they rank? How much were we shook? We take a look at Samsung's devices launched prior to MWC 2019, all the way through to Sony which launched its device on Monday, and see which device really left us with sufficient shock and awe. Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus There's very little this phone lacks. The underscreen fingerprint sensor still can't steal my heart, but the phone's speed and build quality makes up for it. And let me not...

  • Samsung Galaxy A30, A50 mid-rangers get big feature improvements

With all these foldable smartphones and talk of 5G, you'd easily forget that there's actually a mid-range and budget smartphone segment. On Monday, Samsung announced two new devices that'll play in these categories, the Samsung Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50. • Sony Xperia 1 sports 21:9 4K OLED screen, three rear cameras

Sony on Monday officially revealed its new 21:9 aspect ratio smartphone assault team, targeting the mid-range and flagship sectors. First up was the Sony Xperia 1, a device we've head plenty of in the past few weeks. And it seems that the leaks that burst forth last week were indeed accurate. The phone's unique selling point is its screen. There's a 6.5 inch OLED screen with 3840x1644 resolution. Yep, that's a 4K OLED panel on a smartphone. Being it a 21:9 aspect ratio though, the Xperia 1 is notably tall. It's almost 20mm taller than the standard Samsung Galaxy S10, and around...

LG failed to livestream its MWC 2019 event on Sunday, leaving a slew of people in the dark. But thankfully, nothing groundbreaking or bendable was showcased. The company did however unveil three devices, one of which is the LG V50 ThinQ 5G. That name's definitely going to get easier to say. The V50 looks a lot like the V40 for the most part, bar the flush camera array at the rear. It also retains the notch, and screen. The device has a 6.4 inch OLED display with 3120x1440 resolution. Beneath its skin, there's a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 this time around, 6GB of...
