  • PlayStation 3, PS Vita firmware update without much new

It doesn't look like Sony has forgotten about its two other consoles, or has it? The company has released new updates for both the PS3 and Vita, but they don't bring a slew of features or anything interesting at all. The PlayStation 3 has been upgraded to the 4.81 firmware revision, which Sony states "improves the quality of the system performance". Now if that's not insightful, then we don't know what is . The Playstation Vita (and that PlayStatoion TV thing which Sony pretends doesn't exist) has been upgraded to 3.63, which, you guessed it, "improves the...

  • Backwards compatibility: 5 consoles that will play your old games

Unlike PCs, backwards compatibility isn't a guarantee when buying a new video game console. Fortunately, there have been quite a few consoles packing the ability to play older games out of the box. We looked at a few of the more prominent examples. PlayStation 2 Easily the most popular example, the PlayStation 2's ability to play PS1 games was a huge feather in its cap back when it launched in 2000/2001. The console's emulation wasn't 100% perfect at launch though, as Final Fantasy Anthology, Fighter Maker, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Jet Moto 2 and about half a dozen other games weren't compatible. Later versions...

  • PlayStation 4 Pro listed on South Africa’s Raru for R6999

We're just a few months away from gaming on consoles at 4K (or something incredibly close to it) through the conduit of the PlayStation 4 Pro. Announced in early September 2016 at a New York event, the PlayStation 4 Pro will be Sony's most powerful gaming console ever launched, and probably the most powerful available for now. But how much will it cost, and when will it arrive in South Africa? Sony PS4 Pro launched, with PS4 Slim in tow Sony finally took the wraps off the PlayStation 4 Neo in New York last night, revealing that it would also be called...

  • Sony PS4 Pro launched, with PS4 Slim in tow

Sony finally took the wraps off the PlayStation 4 Neo in New York last night, revealing that it would also be called the PS4 Pro instead. The new console was positioned by Sony's Andrew House as an "evolution" over the vanilla PlayStation 4, offering HDR gaming as well as 4K gaming capabilities. The console will "complement" the PS4 though, rather than replace it. Is the PS4 Pro delivering proper 4K? During the press event, House claimed that they had pretty much "maxed out" 1080p television sets, necessitating the move to 4K. Of course, Sony also makes 4K TVs... Sony said that the new...

  • PlayStation Now streaming comes to PC, but not South Africa

Sony's PlayStation Now streaming service is a rather interesting platform, allowing gamers to stream older PlayStation games over the internet. If you're in a major North American or British city, that is. Anyway, the subscription-based service is available on PlayStation 4, Vita and selected Sony TV sets, allowing gamers to play PlayStation 3 titles and more. But you can now add PC support to the fray as well, with the introduction of the PlayStation Now app for Windows. Sony lists minimum requirements as an Intel Core i3 processor or better, Windows 7/8.1/10, 300MB of space, 2GB of RAM and a 5Mbps internet connection. Other...

  • PlayStation Vita has been hacked: here’s how to do it

It's been possible to run homebrew software on the PlayStation Vita for a while now, but pretty much all of these hacks only grant access to the PSP sandbox/environment. In other words, those hoping to harness the Vita's horsepower can't do so, as the hacks are pretty much ports of hacks for Sony's older console. Additionally, many of these hacks require loads of steps or a purchased game to accomplish. Now a new hack has been released, which has jump-started the seemingly tired PlayStation Vita homebrew scene. Dubbed Henkaku, the hack simply requires you to visit the website in question from your Vita or...

  • Gravity Rush 2 heading to Europe on 30 November

Once PlayStation Vita darling Gravity Rush launched on the PlayStation 4 late last year, but Sony has finally given the world a launch date for its home console successor. Gravity Rush 2 is heading to the PlayStation 4 in late November/early December 2016, according to Sony PlayStation's latest blog post. "Gravity Rush 2 marks the return of gravity shifters Kat and Raven (now a powerful ally), ex-cop Syd, and introduces a bevy of new characters," Sony Interactive Entertainment's Olivier Banal explains. Banal also promises the introduction of a "mysterious guardian angel" who will be the first new face of the series. "Angel...

  • PlayStation Network currently down in South Africa [Update]

Update #1, 8.02pm: Well, that didn't last long. After an hour of downtime, PSN is now back up in South Africa and some parts of the world, according to Reddit. I've successfully logged into my account without much of a hitch. If you're still battling, let us know in the comments section below. Original article: Great news, PlayStation faithful. If you were looking to mash a few angered buttons online this evening, you should probably reschedule. Why you ask? Sony's PlayStation Network is currently down. According to PlayStation Network's status website, Sony's currently performing maintenance on the servers (interestingly, maintenance was...

  • E3 2016 is torn a new one by this hilarious, scathing video review

Perhaps we're bucking the trend a bit, but we quite liked E3 2016. Apart from EA's conference, the others were laden with gameplay footage from some great looking games. Horizon Zero Dawn, Dishonored 2, Steep, and the new Legend of Zelda were just four from a great few, but not everyone feels this way. YouTuber Kilian Experience is one of them. Slating this year's E3 as "shit", he runs through each conference and highlights the underlying hilarity of each. "Another Year another E3," he notes on his video description. "I thought E3 2016 was bad. Not a lot of new games...

  • Nostalgia, vikings and facial hair: what I loved about E3 2016

Once again we have been treated to another E3, and as always it feels even more spectacular than the one before. But each year brings with it its own special moments and 2016 was no exception. In this list I will be going through some of my favourite moments of this year. For those who aren’t familiar with the expo, here’s a brief description for some context. E3, formally known as the Electronic Entertainment Expo, is a colossal annual video game expo held in Los Angeles and hosted by the ESA (Entertainment Software Association). What sets it apart from other well-known...
