  • Samsung Galaxy S10’s face unlock can be fooled by a photo, video or your best friend

The previous generation of Samsung's face unlock system used an iris scanner, but the firm ditched that specific design element in the S10 series in favour of its cut-out selfie camera. Now, it seems that this decision has come back to haunt users (and their likeness). A video published by AndroidWorld.it demonstrates this vulnerability in detail. To unlock the Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e or S10 Plus, it seems that all a user need do is hold up a photograph or video of themselves to the phone. Others have noted this too. While AndroidWorld used a still image on another device, Unbox Therapy...

  • It takes deep, deep scratches to kill the Galaxy S10’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor

Zack Nelson, better known as YouTube's favourite smartphone durability tester JerryRigEverything, recently found himself a Samsung Galaxy S10 to destroy. I mean, someone has to do it. And it's good that he does. In his latest clip, he tests the S10's ultrasonic fingerprint sensor thoroughly with his extremely relaxing voice and sharp set of picks. While he lauds the device's solid build, he takes particular interest in the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner placed beneath the screen of the S10 and S10 Plus. When scratched excessively with a level 7 pick on the Moh's Scale of hardness, the fingerprint reader functioned admirably. But what about...

  • South Africa’s getting the ‘slower’ Samsung Galaxy S10 variant, benchmarks suggest

If you couldn't care less about benchmarks and actually use your smartphone as a phone, this news probably won't apply to you. But if you care about floating points, PCMark scores, and raw performance numbers, you may want to take a seat. Even more so if you're planning to purchase a Samsung Galaxy S10 or S10 Plus. According to benchmarks performed by Anandtech, the Exynos 9820 version of the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus -- the version of the phone South Africa will receive -- is notably slower than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855-powered devices offering in the likes of the US. The 855...

  • Samsung’s most expensive Galaxy S10 phone will cost R35999

Hate it or, well, hate it, but smartphone prices are inflating like a helium balloon in South Africa. Samsung on Wednesday revealed the pricing of its Galaxy S10 range, and in the process, reminded us of just how much we pay for devices. The cheapest version of the S10, namely the small Galaxy S10e, will be priced at R15 999 -- R500 more than the Samsung Galaxy S9 it replaces. The Samsung Galaxy S10 will start at R18 999 -- the launch price of last year's Samsung Galaxy Note 9. And finally, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus -- the creme de la creme...

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus vs Galaxy Note 9: did Samsung just kill the Note?

Dear smartphone user, you've been put into a horrifying position today thanks to Samsung. The company on Wednesday launched its Galaxy S10 Plus, a phone that's probably more similar to a high-end PC than a calling and messaging machine. But if you already have Samsung's other large but older flagship, the Galaxy Note 9, do you upgrade? Is the jump between the S10 Plus that big? For one, the S10 Plus is slightly smaller, but it trumps the Note 9 in almost every other specification. The screen resolution is denser, the processor is newer, it has two additional cameras. Moreover, the S10 Plus...

  • Everything we know about the Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e and S10 Plus

This week opens the year's most frantic smartphone launch period. Before the month is through, we'll see devices from Sony, LG and Nokia, just to name a few. But before any of those devices are tied to exorbitant mobile network packages with SMSes you'll never use, Samsung will steal the limelight. As always, the Korean firm will launch its wares, namely the Samsung Galaxy S10 family, in San Francisco a few days before Barcelona's MWC 2019 smartphone expo. And yes, "family" because the company's planning more than just a duo this time. How many phones are we talking? According to a flood of rumours,...

  • 3 phones we can’t wait to see at MWC 2019

The world's biggest annual smartphone expo is now just a few weeks away. MWC is like Christmas in February, but for smartphone journalists and power users. Each year, the globe's biggest brands -- combined with a few up and coming surprises -- descend on Barcelona to peacock their wares. But while some phones are almost confirmed to be showcased at the event, other manufacturers haven't quite made their intentions concrete. We take a look at the devices we'll definitely see launched in Spain in February, while rating the likelihood of the others making an appearance. Sony Xperia XZ4 Sony is set for a big...

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 to feature a cut-out selfie camera within the screen

We're probably a few months and a festive season from the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S10, but trust serial leaker Evan Blass to out some juicy information. The Venturebeat writer took to Twitter to divulge some S10 details. Firstly, Blass suggests the phone will feature a "punch hole" selfie camera up front. This isn't a notch in the traditional sense, but rather a hole within the screen itself that houses the camera. Few preliminary Galaxy S10 details: - "Punch hole" style selfie cam cutout (sounds like Infinity-O display). - Ultrasonic, in-display FPS - Three rear cameras (standard/wide/tele) - One UI over Android Pie — Evan Blass...

  • Samsung Galaxy F will launch in March 2019, report suggests

After Samsung revealed its foldable smartphone/tablet concept early last week, "industry sources" chatting to Korea's Yonhap News believes that a consumer device is just on the horizon. The publication suggests that Samsung will launch a foldable smartphone alongside the Samsung Galaxy S10 in March. "According to the sources, the South Korean tech giant plans to unveil the flagship Galaxy S10 smartphone in February, followed by the presumed foldable Galaxy F and another edition of the Galaxy S10 that runs on the 5G network in March," the publication's report reads. The phone, which has been called the Samsung Galaxy F, will feature a...

  • Snapdragon 855 benchmarks leak: is it faster than the Kirin 980?

The upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 has reportedly been profiled and benchmarked on Geekbench. Scores published to the benchmark site earlier this week allegedly parades some of the chipset's hard performance numbers. The American chipmaker's new silicon outpaces the current Snapdragon 845 by around 50%, scoring 3697 on its single-core performance run. The 845 scores around 2400. Additionally, the 855's multi-core performance numbers is now pushing 10000 points. 10469 to be exact. How does this compare to its rivals? The 855 will be quicker than the HiSilicon Kirin 970, which powers the Huawei P20 Pro and Mate 10 Pro. The latter is considerably slower, scoring...
